Meet Our Principal, Abby Stotsenberg
I am honored to serve as the principal of Vernon Malone College and Career Academy. VMCCA is noted for its innovative practices and its unyielding dedication to students. Our school’s vision is to develop students into global problem-solvers who are college and career ready and I am thrilled work with teachers and students in pursuit of that goal.
Students at VMCCA will engage in Project-Based Learning (PBL) in every course. This affords them the opportunity to explore the curriculum by examining real world problems and seeking solutions through collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and authentic communication practices. In addition, students will earn a high school diploma, college credits and industry certification. All courses are offered on our campus and seek to promote our goal of college and career readiness.
Our teachers work tirelessly to build relationships with students in order to ensure that all students are prepared for life after high school. Part of this work includes the use of effective instructional practices but, just as importantly, they also teach employability skills, provide career research assistance, and help connect students to internships within their program area. In short, our teachers are passionate about their work and care deeply about all students.
My passion and beliefs about education have been shaped over the past twenty-one years working in public schools. I started my career in Cumberland and Hoke Counties where I served as a middle school language arts and social studies teacher. In 1999, I moved to Raleigh to be a social studies teacher at Southeast Raleigh High School and later earned a graduate degree in school leadership from North Carolina State University. Since then, I have had the pleasure of serving as an assistant principal at Leesville Road Middle School and as a curriculum and instructional specialist at the district level for middle and high school programs. As principal of VMCCA, am able to work with the most thoughtful, and committed group of students and teachers that I have ever seen. I look forward to the work we will do together.
