BYOD Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
Is the BYOD program the same as being in a 1:1 school?
The Bring Your Own Device program is NOT a 1-1 device program. While the BYOD program may create situations in which all students have access to an electronic device, we are not assigning laptops, tablets, or other devices for permanent use. Devices will be provided while at school for those students who need to borrow a device.
-
What should I buy to protect my student's device?
Again, RHS and WCPSS are not responsible for your student's device and will not replace or repair lost or damaged items. This includes the actual device, accessories, or audio equipment. We also recommend insurance and a protective cover or case for your student’s device.
-
If my student forgets his/her device, should I bring it to school?
No. If your student forgets his or her device, the school will provide a substitute device. We will not interrupt instruction.
-
Is there a specific device that I need to purchase for my student?
No. While laptops are preferred, Chromebooks, 2-in-1 laptops, iPads, tablets, and smartphones are acceptable, as well. Choose the device that works best for your student. Remember, RHS will accommodate students who do not have a device for classroom activities.
-
What if I don't have a device to bring to school?
Students without devices will be provided a device to use while in class or will be paired to share a device. No one will be penalized for not bringing a device!
-
Can I use 3G, 4G, or a VPN during school?
No. Students are expected to use the BYOD network.
-
What if my device is damaged or stolen?
You are responsible for your own device. Neither Rolesville High School nor WCPSS is responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen devices. Your parents/guardian may wish to insure your device and/or purchase the extended warranty.
-
What tech support is provided?
Students will be responsible for troubleshooting their own devices. RHS faculty assumes a “hands-off” device policy and will be unable to assist in physical troubleshooting.
-
Will there be charging stations to recharge batteries?
No. Devices that have been charged at home should have enough battery life to last during the school day.
-
Do I need to pay for any special applications or programs for my device?
WCPSS will be providing Google accounts with Google Apps for Education for all students. Most other tools will be web-based and should be free.
-
When may I use my device?
You may use your device before or after school, during lunch, and when your teacher permits you to use it in class. Your classroom teacher is the one who determines whether or not you will need your device during his/her class period.
-
How do I access the internet?
Your teachers will tell you how to access the internet, or you may ask in the Media Center. For BYOD, you will be using a different network than the one typically used by WCPSS employees.
