Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year
On behalf of the staff at Wilburn Elementary School, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2017-18 school year. We are looking forward to continuing a productive partnership with you. This promises to be a year filled with golden opportunities for all of our students as we EXCEL to find ways that we can be even better than we have before! We embark on this journey with a pledge to you, our students and parents, that this will be a year of engaging, meaningful, and rigorous work for our students.
This year we have numerous special events, clubs, and performing arts groups for our students to stay connected to the “Wildcat Den!” We understand that it takes a strong home and school partnership to achieve this goal and make a difference in your child’s education. Our staff of highly qualified professional educators and support personnel is committed to providing our students many opportunities both inside and outside the school. Along with teachers and staff, I work hard to build strong relationships with parents, students and community partners. We will focus on Common Core, character education, use of data to inform instruction, direct instruction strategies to, and improve core instruction and increase student achievement, and providing enrichment activities for students.
We look forward to a very positive and productive year together! We extend a special, yearlong invitation to our families to join us at school activities and events whenever possible. We want . . . we need . . . and we value your involvement and support in your child’s education! Your active participation is key to the success. Please take time to become a registered volunteer at Wilburn Elementary school. We need you to EXCEL!
Please know that we highly value home/school communication at Wilburn. It is vital and plays an integral role in each student’s success. Each staff member has a Dojo account, so that we can contact parents immediately if a problem or opportunity arises. Please take time and sign up for this account during our “Meet the Teacher” event.
This tool will help you know about your child’s studies, assignments, assessments, and school activities, as well as other events and happenings.
Ways to Support your child’s learning:
- Ensuring they are in school daily and arrive on time ready for the day’s learning experience
- Reading daily to develop a love for literacy and help increase comprehension skills
- Completing all homework assignments
- Attending family conferences and communicate regularly with your child’s teacher
- Informing your child’s teacher or school personnel if your child needs additional support
- Sharing school experiences during and after school
- Encouraging your child daily and communicating your expectations for them to succeed in school
If your child is dropped off in carpool, please enter in the carpool line in a single file line. We do not have double lanes in the morning for drop-off. Please make sure your child(ren) have their backpacks and are ready to exit the vehicle. Parents if you are walking your child into school, please do not pull around to the side of the building. You must park in the parking lot and walk them across. We make every effort to keep your child safe and prevent any accidents from occurring. We are also asking that parents refrain from cell phone usage while in the carpool line. It is important that we are paying attention for the safety of all children at WES.
We realize the line is a bit longer, but with everyone’s help, we are able to receive every child in school by 9:15. Our bell rings exactly at 9:15. If your child arrives after this time, you will be asked to come inside to sign them in school. In the afternoon, we do not dismiss students after 3:00, as we protect the last 45 minutes of instruction. If you decide to not use carpool in the afternoon and come inside and sign your child out, they will not be dismissed to families until after 3:55 when carpool has started.
If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to send me an email Ldove2@wcpss.net.
Breakfast is served daily from 8:45-9:10. Please make sure is at school prior to 9:10, if you would like for them to eat breakfast. All of our students are able to receive free breakfast daily.
