Degrees and Certifications:
I’ve been at Mary Phillips HS for seven years, and I enjoy the energy of an alternative school. I truly believe that the world is comprised of unique individuals, so I like being in an environment that’s designed to embrace differences—as it relates to life circumstances, learning styles, or personalities. I think one of the downfalls of contemporary society is that so many people want to be like everyone else and want to possess what others have. I say run your own race, pursue your own destiny, and listen to your own heart.
I believe we all make mistakes, but we can also be lifelong learners. It’s important to apply what we learn and not make the same mistakes over and over again. We can overcome all kinds of problems if we understand that everything isn’t easy. It’s better to struggle a bit in the beginning so we don’t have to struggle forever.
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, but I spent a lot of time in Eastern North Carolina with my grandparents. I love the outdoors, and since I was in my 20s, I’ve been a gardener—growing flowers and vegetables.
I earned a Bachelor's Degree in English from Hofstra University and a Master's Degree from New York University. Both times, I majored in creative writing. I write fiction and creative non-fiction—mostly about how people react when they find themselves in challenging situations. I am certified in English and special education.
