Degrees and Certifications:
Growing up in East Lansing, Michigan, home of Michigan State University, I was surrounded by teachers, mentors and professors. In my junior year of HS, I had the privilege of taking an elective which enabled me to teach math to middle school students. I absolutely loved watching student’s faces light up when they finally understood a problem. When I graduated from HS, I attended Michigan State University, determined to teach secondary mathematics. My student teaching experience was in an American HS in The Hague, Netherlands. I had the privilege of living with a Dutch family during that time. I was not only exposed to international students in my classroom, but lived in a completely different culture for 4 months. Those exposures furthered my education beyond the academics.
After graduating from MSU and marrying my high school sweetheart, we moved to North Carolina. Because of my husband’s desire to further his education at NC State, we made our home in Raleigh. It was here we started our family, 2 daughters and 1 son.
I chose to stay home and raise my children during the day, and started teaching at Phillips HS part time in the evenings. I enjoyed the small personal classes and made the commitment to teach full time when my own children were in school. I have been teaching at Phillips since the fall of 1994. I am thankful I have the opportunity to impact students’ lives every day in and out of the classroom. Phillips HS has become my second family. We learn from each other, grow with each other and care for each other.
