PTA Color Run SAVE THE DATE-April 21st 9:00 AM-12:00 PM West Cary Middle School will hold its 2nd annual color run on April 21st. This event is the school's only fundraiser so please be sure to save the date. Even if you are not a runner you can come join in on this fun day. Registration for the run will be held in the month of March. If you own a business and would like to be one of our sponsors or you would like to take an active role in helping with this wonderful event please contact Lea Ann Troiano.-email lea.ann.troiano@gmail.com. This is the PTA’s only big fundraising event for the year and 100% of the proceeds go to purchasing technology for classroom teachers at West Cary. The PTA and school’s technology goal is to achieve a 1-to-1 laptop computer ratio for our students. We are getting closer to this goal each year! There will be fun and games, a DJ, and of course good family and community comradery that defines this culture event for West Cary.

Student Surveys and Recognitions In the upcoming week or two we will send students a two surveys through their WCPSS student email account. These surveys are a Student Perceptions Survey and a Difference Maker Survey. We want to know student perceptions of West Cary and capture their thoughts. Students are our number #1 priority and we want to hear their feedback. The Difference Maker Survey is a chance for students to nominate one teacher OR staff member who has or is making a difference in their lives at school. We want to receive student feedback and recognize the teacher or staff member who is having a profound impact in the lives of a student. Both of these surveys support our work and focus on building student relationships at West Cary. Please encourage your child to take part in both of these surveys. They will be coming soon to their WCPSS student email account. A big focus of our professional development at West Cary is addressing student relationships. As an administrative staff our expectations are that every student is greeted at the classroom door each class period with a handshake, fist-bump, a smile, or some form of greeting. We want students to know we are glad they are here. We are also providing professional development for how teachers communicate with students with: classroom expectations, problem-solve difficulties, academic achievement, praise and recognition. We know and continue to refine our processes that we can make a difference with students when we have developed a trust with them. If we can win their spirit, then we can win their minds for learning.

Teacher Additions to West Cary Parents – West Cary has received additional teacher allotments for the spring semester! This is great news as it allows us to help provide support to the content area teachers where we have extremely large student-to-teacher ratios. Lowering of our class sizes has nothing to do with class size mandates at the elementary school level. This is strictly a West Cary decision since we have additional teacher allotment supports. The academic areas we will be focusing on are: 6th grade social studies, 6 th grade science, 7th grade English-Language Arts, and 8th grade science. With the addition of these new teaching positions we will be making adjustments to student schedules. We will be reassigning students in these subject areas to the new teachers beginning January 23rd, 2018, the first day of the spring semester. We will communicate to those students well in advance of January 23rd. While we recognize change is sometimes difficult, we will do our best to balance classes keeping in mind such factors as: demographics, gender, ethnicity, AIG, and special education considerations. We will not be able to please everyone. But we are committed to finding the best teachers that are worthy of West Cary and to have all children in an excellent classroom. We are also adding a new teacher to our CTE elective offerings. We are looking to bring on a teacher who can provide instruction for Exploring Middle Grades Computer Science. We are excited about this opportunity to diversify what we offer at West Cary!

Upcoming Musical Performances There will be musical performances this month at West Cary. The Show Choir and Strings Winter Concert will be held on Thursday, December 14th at 7 pm in the school auditorium. On Tuesday, December 19th the West Cary Band concert will be held at 7 pm in the school auditorium.

Holiday Dance The Student Government Association and National Junior Honor Society are hosting a school holiday dance on Friday, December 15th , 2:30-5:30 in the school cafeteria. Tickets are being sold every morning in front of the auditorium. Tickets are $5.

Student Artists I want to acknowledge and thank Mr. Lial Miller, our Art Teacher, who has done amazing work with our students over the last two years. He is continually working with our kids to not only teach them art and bring out their creativity, but to find opportunities for students to showcase their art work. Jennifer Nguyen has been recognized for her creativity in art work. Jennifer has been chosen as a winner for the State Health Department - Antibiotics Awareness Poster contest. Her art work will be made into posters that are on display in Doctor’s offices all over the state of North Carolina! Also, many West Cary students submitted art work to S & A Communications for their Holiday Card image. We will see if any West Cary students were chosen for their art work.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up Parents – if you are dropping off students late to school, we require that you escort students into school. This is a safety concern and procedure we must follow. Also, as always, if you are checking out students early from school, please come to the main office to sign them out. We will call the student’s classroom to have them sent to the front office. Please do not call or text them telling them to come up to the main office. Again, this is a safety and accountability concern and procedure to follow.

West Cary Strings! The West Cary Strings Program participated in two Wake County events this past week. Under the direction of Mr. Bill Slechta, the West Cary Strings Students performed in a Wake County show at Green Hope High School. The Strings Students also performed in a co-production show with the Cary High School Strings Program. In both performances our students did very well and represented West Cary with distinction.

ATTENTION PARENTS - Student Concerns A concern has arisen about students “necking” each other or playing “Smack Cam,” which is done through the program “Vine.” Both of these student misbehaviors result in people slapping or hitting kids hard on the neck or cheek. Students who are doing these misbehaviors with the Smack Cam are also posting the video to Vine. While we have no confirmed incidences of the Smack Cam being done at West Cary, and we’ve searched the internet for any instances – it appears to be a potential growing trend we want to get out in front of. We have had instances of students hitting each other on the back of the neck (“necking”) and we have dealt with those students in accordance with the Code of Student Conduct. Our message for parents is we want you to be aware of what your children or their friends may be engaging in with these forms of misbehaviors. And lastly, as school, we will investigate and administer consequences for these misbehaviors swiftly. Neither of these forms of misbehavior will be tolerated at West Cary. And, these misbehaviors are not in alignment with Reggie Dabbs’ message to them.

IMPS in Need Thank you again for the wonderful response we received in collecting food donations for our Backpack Buddies program. In our continued efforts to support our Backpack Buddies students and their families we will be starting a fundraiser called “IMPS in Need”. We will be collecting donations for an emergency fund that our school Social Worker, Ms. Ellingsworth, will only use in extreme cases as a last resort. The students who have been identified to be in the program are currently living in transitional housing and their families face extreme financial hardships. They often need help with food, shelter, transportation, utilities, clothing, etc.. Ms. Ellingsoworth assists the families with finding the resources they need through referrals with various agencies and charitable organizations, including Dorcas, Catholic Charities, local churches, Triangle Family Services, Haven House and Project CATCH, to name a few. However, there is often a waiting period after Ms. Ellingsworth has made a referral and there are times when our students are in a desperate situation. The IMPS in Need program will offer immediate relief. The funds will only be used in extreme cases after Ms. Ellingworth has exhausted all local community resources.  For the IMPS in Need program we are requesting that only gift cards be donated. Families will never directly receive cash or gift cards. Ms. Ellingworth will handle all transactions and purchases. The funds will be held with Student Services and Ms. Ellingsworth will consult with the Guidance Counselors before all purchases. She will also keep a record on how and when the funds are used. We always respect and protect the privacy of our students and their families. If you would like to donate gift cards we will have a secured donation box labeled “Gift Card Donations” in the Front Office between Monday, October 23rd - Friday, October 27th. *Please donate gift cards from: Target or Walmart, Visa or Master prepaid cards and gas stations- BP, Sheetz, Shell or Citgo. *Please do NOT donate items other then gift cards. We are ONLY requesting specific gift cards that will be most helpful to meet the needs of the families. *Please attach the activation receipt with all gift cards to verify the amount. *Please donate gift cards in increments of $20.00 (We are requesting gas gift cards because the students frequently move between shelters and temporary housing and do not always have access to riding a school bus so parents must often provide transportation back and forth to school.) Thank you for helping our IMPS in Need, and giving the students the opportunity to Dream, Believe, Achieve in school by overcoming the hardships they face outside of school.

Reggie Dabbs – Follow Up We had four awesome assemblies with Reggie Dabbs. Each grade level got to listen to him perform music and share an inspirational message. I’m quite certain you will be able to speak with your children and they will be able to tell you all about Reggie’s message. Reggie also spoke to parents and shared with them his message to the students. I want to thank our PTA for doing the heavy lifting to bring Reggie to West Cary. West Cary was the only middle school in Wake County he was speaking at for this school year.

Thank You! I would like to give a big “Thank You” to our PTA and Parent Volunteers who helped provide our staff lunch on our Teacher Workday – Thursday, September 21. We had a delicious mix of soups and salads that all of our teachers enjoyed. Your contributions certainly made for a great teacher workday and professional development training.

Did You Know… Our cafeteria staff earned recognition in a recent competition among all Cary area schools for their Chef’s Salad. West Cary Child and Nutrition Services made the area’s best Chef’s Salad and earned the highest achievement for taste and presentation. I can attest to these accolades as I get at least one Chef’s Salad each week. Also, our cafeteria manager informs us the produce used in the salads are grown locally in North Carolina!

Students should have brought home a student-parent contract with all of the information and expectations for how BYOD will be implemented at our school and what our expectations are for students. • BYOD is for instructional purposes only with direction from the classroom teacher.
    • Signage is posted for all students to adhere to with usage of their electronic devices. A red sign means “no electronic devices should be used or seen”, a yellow sign means “electronic devices can be used on a limited basis with teacher direction”, a green sign means “students can use their electronic devices on their own.” All hallways are RED zones – electronic devices should not be used or seen. The cafeteria is a GREEN zone during lunches. The gym is a GREEN zone BEFORE SCHOOL ONLY. Teachers will post the appropriate sign outside of their classroom door to inform students of the expectations for the day regarding electronic devices.

Parents – if you have not reviewed the student-parent contract agreement for BYOD, please review it as soon as possible.

Social Media Parents – you should have received an email from Dr. James Merrill, WCPSS Superintendent regarding social media. I can’t stress enough the importance of his message. Social media is a part of our cultural fabric and it is our responsibility to be engaged with our children and the usage of social media. To quote Dr. Merrill “I ask you to monitor their social media. Young people are committing too many mistakes for which they do not fully appreciate and understand the consequences. Please help them with that understanding.” It has been our observation over the last two years that over 95% of student-to student discipline issues result from “drama” that is started over social media outside of school hours that boils over into our school. Please help us address and prevent social media drama!

A VERY BIG THANK YOU! Thank you students, parents, and teachers for a successful opening of our school year. We had almost no issues outside of bus transportation. Please remember that WCPSS schedules all routes, bus assignments, and bus stops – this is not a school building level issue. Grading Plan Last week I communicated to families our new grading plan/policy. Below is a bullet point list for the purpose of our school-wide grading plan.

    •  We believe all students should be assessed on learning that is aligned to the North Carolina State Standards.
    •  We do NOT believe that students should be graded for completion, compliance, and routines.
    •  Homework and classwork grades will no longer affect a student’s academic record.
    • We believe that homework and classwork is practice for students and that students should have that time of practice without penalty.
    • Note that homework and classwork CAN and WILL be assigned and graded by the teacher, but the grades will be used to provide meaningful feedback and WILL NOT impact a student’s academic record. Bottom line - We want a student’s grade to be based upon successful proficiency, understanding, and higher order thinking that is tightly aligned to the North Carolina State Standards. This grading plan will give us the most accurate measure of where a student is in their learning of those standards. Access the entire plan on our school website: http://www.wcpss.net/domain/13160
