9/13/16 - What is the CogAT?
The CogAT assessment appraises the cognitive development of students from K-12. The test measures students' learned reasoning abilities. Although ground in biological processes, these abilities are developed through in-school and out-of-school experiences. The questions on the CogAT require students to demonstrate their reasoning abilities in each of the three symbol systems most closely related to success in school: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal reasoning. The test is divided into three separate sections. Each sections contain three sub-tests.

The Verbal Battery assesses students' abilities to use search, retrieval, and comparison processes that are essential for verbal reasoning. The three sub-tests for this battery are verbal analogies, sentence completion, and verbal classification.

The Quantitative Battery assesses students' abilities to reason about patterns and relations using concepts that are essential in quantitative thinking. The three sub-tests for this battery are number analogies, number puzzles, and number series.

The Nonverbal Battery assesses students' abilities to reason with somewhat more novel questions that use spatial and figural content. The three sub-tests for this battery are matrices, paper folding, and figure classification.

    9/13/16- 3rd Grade CogAT
All Wilburn 3rd graders began taking the CogAT test today. Each student will complete 9 sub-tests over the course of 3 days. These will be administered by their homeroom teachers. Results from the CogAT will be used when we begin the identification process for our third graders.

9/12/16 - First Semester AIG Process
Testing is underway for any students nominated for first semester AIG. If you have questions or concerns please contact Miss Sheehan at asheehan@wcpss.net.

    8/22/16 - 3rd Grade Explorers
Miss Sheehan has started going into all third grade classrooms to teach Explorer's lessons. These lessons consist of highly engaging activities that require students to problem solve, think critically, think deeper, work collaboratively, and reflect on their individual learning process. All classes will work with Miss Sheehan once a week for the next 8 weeks or so. After that time small groups will be created using student data and teacher input. These groups will begin seeing Miss Sheehan in a small setting as scheduled by the teachers.
