    Principal’s Otter Splash 5/7/2021

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I hope everyone could make Mother’s Day special for the ones you were able to celebrate.

This week on Wednesday, we will not have an asynchronous learning day. Students will be on campus on Wednesday, May 12.

Thank you for making our staff feel special during Teacher Appreciation Week. The PTA did an amazing job organizing the events for the week. Our teachers felt all the kindness, consideration, and love from our Otter Families.

We also want to thank you for your participation in our Family Academy, Otter Cuddles and Supporting Family Struggles. We had so much fun sharing bedtime stories with our Otters. Also, we hope you found the parent information sessions helpful.

    Face Covering Update:

WCPSS sent out the update to face covering guidelines to staff and families late Thursday afternoon. If you missed it, you can find it here:

Based on new guidance issued Wednesday by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), face coverings are now optional while outdoors. Face coverings are still required for everyone ages 5 and older while indoors and on school transportation.

This means students and staff will not be required to wear face coverings outdoors for recess, classes held outdoors, outdoor PE classes, outdoor eating, and similar small gatherings.

Students and staff may choose to wear a face covering outdoors in these situations if they want, but a school or staff member may not require it.

NCDHHS still recommends that anyone who is not vaccinated continue to wear a face covering when they are closer than six feet to another person, even when outdoors. However, this is a NCDHHS recommendation and not a requirement.

At Oak Grove, we know that this new guidance will be received by individuals in different ways. We respect each individual’s decision, and we are mindful that this is a recommendation and not a requirement. You will see some of our staff and students continue to wear face coverings, even while outside. Others will remove face coverings when they feel comfortable to do so. When children remove face coverings outside, it will be important for them to keep track of their personal items as face coverings are still required inside. Please have that conversation with your students, as well.

Yearbooks are here! Last Day to Order is Monday, May 10!:

It’s been a memorable year, and you don’t want to miss your chance to purchase a 2020-2021 yearbook. We sent home paper copies of the flyer to our in-person students. Anyone can visit www.strawbridge.net and use the online code: FMYB100246 to place an order. The yearbooks will cost $17.

    21-22 School Year Planning:

This message was sent to families on Friday afternoon: You are receiving this message because you have a child who is assigned to a multi-track year-round school for the 2021-22 school year. As we plan for more normal routines this coming school year, we are pleased to let you know we will be providing year-round classes on multiple tracks next year at your child’s school. This will allow us to maintain the intent and integrity of year-round calendars as a calendar option for our families. Your principal will be in touch soon with more information about track assignments for next year. We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Ms. Rhodes, Ms. Dahlhoff, and I are working on Track assignments now that we have this official word. We hope to have Track assignment information to families no later than May 20.

    Health Screening Changes:

As stated in the family communication that was sent out on Tuesday, April 6, we will no longer conduct on-site health screenings. We need your help to keep our school communities healthy by keeping your student home if they are not feeling well or have been diagnosed with or exposed to COVID-19. Thank you for your cooperation. More information

    Face Covering Update:

We expect to receive more information during the week of May 3 about the update to face covering guidelines for times with students are outdoors. We are all going to wait until we receive word from WCPSS before we change our safety protocols at school. The information sent out to families this week had this announcement:

Face Coverings Guidelines for Outdoors are Expected to Change Next Week
We expect that next week, the state will update its face covering guidance for K-12 public schools to reflect the Governor’s newest Executive Order. When this happens, we will update our guidelines to make face coverings optional when outdoors on WCPSS property. They will still be required indoors and on school transportation. While not required, NCDHHS still recommends that anyone who is not vaccinated continue to wear a face covering when they are closer than six feet to another person, even when outdoors.

Hello, Oak Grove family! Welcome to Spring! Saturday marks the first day of Spring, 2021. I love this time of year and how it often represents new beginnings.

Speaking of new beginnings, on Monday, March 15, in-person (Non-VA) 4th and 5th graders returned to campus. It was a great week with all our in-person students. We are still in the process of continuing to improve and refine our practices to meet the needs of all our students. Every time a new change has happened, our teachers have heroically stepped up to the plate. We thank our parents for all of your support. I personally heard from many of you over the past couple of weeks. Your kind words are so appreciated. You consistently recognize that, despite all the challenges, Oak Grove staff is doing an amazing job. We hope you know how much we love your students and recognize the hard work that families are putting forth to make this a success for everyone.

Wednesday, March 24, IS NOT an asynchronous/remote learning day. Students will come on campus on Wednesday. March 29 and March 30 are remote learning days. Students will not be on campus those days. March 31 is the beginning of our final track-out this year.

Finally, it is important to know the guidelines we are required to follow for sick students in-person. Please make sure you are familiar with these guidelines that were emailed out to families from WCPSS on February 10. When to Return to School

Oak Grove families, we truly value your input, especially when it comes to special events for our school community.  Please take a moment to complete this short survey so that we can meet your needs when planning for our next OGES family engagement event.  Thank you so much!

    Curbside Pickup Survey:

Our library is looking for your feedback on our current curbside pickup services.  Please fill out this survey (English or Español) to tell us how we can improve curbside pickup to better suit your family's needs.
