Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. It was so wonderful to have our Otters back on campus this week. We have missed you so much, and our building feels so much better with you all back here!

On February 22, Cohort 3/C 4th and 5th graders will return to campus. If you are planning to carpool, please check out the reminders further down in this Splash. Cohort 1/A 4th and 5th graders will come the week of March 1.

On Friday, February 26, we will say “Goodbye” to our wonderful Ms. Terry Williams. Ms. Williams has served Oak Grove almost since the building opened. Like so many of you, she first fell in love with The Grove as a parent. She has been an amazing Lead Secretary and Bookkeeper, but she has decided that the time has come to begin her retirement (I think her new grandson helped make that decision). We will miss her so much!

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone is staying warm this week and having a wonderful weekend. We had some excitement with the promise of snow this week. While it didn’t last long, it was beautiful to see.

In case you missed it, on January 7, WCPSS sent out an update to the inclement weather guidelines. Here they are:

    Update to Inclement Weather Guidelines
During the 2020-2021 school year, an asynchronous learning day will be used when the weather prevents us from having in-person classes. No make-up day will be required. Schools will take into consideration that winter weather and snow days are a time-honored celebration in our community and assign work accordingly. While there will be requirements for work, families should expect to also have time to celebrate their own traditions. Families will continue to receive an email and text message when the school day is modified due to inclement weather. When possible, the announcement will be made the day before so families can plan.

On Friday, January 29, teachers distributed Quarter 2 report cards. Please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions.

February 1-5 is National School Counselor Week. Please join me in thanking our amazing counselor, Ms. Michot. Ms. Michot always works tirelessly to attend to the social and emotional needs of our school family. During the pandemic, she has gone above and beyond in ensuring our family is supported.

This week, on Wednesday, February 3, we will have an asynchronous day. Your child’s teacher will be in touch to let you know the expectations for Wednesday.

    Quarter 3 Item Distribution:

We have completed the item distribution and only have a few packets still left at school. If you did not pick up a packet, please stop by school this week during our normal office hours of 8:00-4:30. Please make sure you wear a mask at all times while on campus.

    Change to Powerschool communication:

There will be an upgrade to our School Messenger system on February 1. If you do not receive my Otter Splash School Messenger on Sunday, February 7, 2021, please contact Alisa Dahlhoff (adahlhoff@wcpss.net).

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ms. Rhodes or me with any questions you may have. We are happy to help.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. We are so excited about the start of Quarter 3. On Monday, January 25, we will welcome back our students. We have missed you so much!

As I’m sure you know, the Wake County Board of Education voted on Thursday, January 14, for all K-12 students to remain in remote instruction until mid-February. Your child’s teacher is looking forward to welcoming back our students virtually on Monday. Please make sure they are ready to go at 9:15. Our teachers held Google Meets on Friday, January 22, to ensure a smooth start to Quarter 3. We also enjoyed the opportunity to see the smiling faces that we love so much!

On Friday, January 29, teachers will distribute Quarter 2 report cards. Please be on the lookout for these to come via email after the end of the school day on Friday.

    Quarter 3 Item Distribution:

We will have 2 dates for Item Distribution for Quarter 3: January 26 (Track 1 and 2) and January 27 (Track 3 and 4). Please see this Second Semester Material Information Document for specifics about what is included with this distribution. Additionally, if you ordered your child’s picture, it will be included in the item distribution packet. Items will be arranged by teacher and located at the front of the school. Please make sure you wear a mask at all times while on campus.

    Make-up Picture Days:

If you were unable to have your child’s picture taken during our first opportunity, teachers will be sending a Sign-up Genius for you to sign up for one of the upcoming dates, January 27 and 28. January 27 will be for Tracks 1 and 2. January 28 will be for Tracks 3 and 4. Also, if you are not happy with the original picture, you can have a retake on one of these dates.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ms. Rhodes or me with any questions you may have. We are happy to help.

Hello, Oak Grove family and Happy New Year! I hope everyone has had a safe and restful track-out. On Tuesday, January 19, teachers will return to work to begin to prepare for Quarter 3. Then, on Monday, January 25, we will welcome back our students.

As I’m sure you know, the Wake County Board of Education voted on Thursday, January 14, for all K-12 students to remain in remote instruction until mid-February. I’m sure this was a difficult decision, and the Board had to consider the increasing percentage of positive cases, the level of community spread in our county, and staffing concerns. As best as I can tell, they are planning to meet on February 9 with a decision to be implemented the week of February 15. Of course, those dates are subject to change. We have been so happy to have students back in the building during the second quarter, and we hope to see our Otters in person again soon.

As my administrative team made plans for our Spring semester and finalizing our in-person and Virtual Academy plans, we see very few changes that need to be made. We will communicate those changes by the end of the day on January 20. We have tried to maintain consistency to the extent possible. Any changes will go into effect on January 25, even though we are not in-person. We have to make adjustments at the change of a quarter due to the management systems (Powerschool) that we use for grades and attendance. Making a change mid-quarter creates too many problems for the system.

    Welcome Back Google Meet:

On Friday, January 22, teachers will be making arrangements to have a brief Google Meet with their class to say, “Welcome Back”. This has been a really long track-out, and we have missed you all so much! We want everyone to be ready to go and back in their school community.

Items will be arranaged by teacher and located at the front of the school.

    Principal’s Otter Splash 12/18/2020

Hello, Oak Grove familyI hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  Last week was our final week of on-campus instruction for the year 2020. We have two days of remote learning on December 21 and 22, with the teachers providing live instruction both days. Then, we will end quarter 2 and begin Winter Break and Track-out. We look forward to seeing everyone in 2021. Quarter 3 begins on January 25, 2021.

Traditional Calendar schools in WCPSS return to class on January 4. On Tuesday, December 15, the WCPSS School Board voted to provide only remote instruction from January 4-15. We will all be on Track-out during those dates, so that change only impacts Traditional Calendar schools.

During the beginning of January, my administrative team will be looking at our Spring semester and finalizing our in-person and Virtual Academy plans. If any changes to class assignments need to be made, we will communicate those changes in January. We are still looking carefully at numbers and assessing the situation. As always, we will try to maintain consistency to the extent possible. However, some changes may need to be made at the semester.

From the entire Oak Grove Staff, we want to thank our incredibly supportive families and community. Although this has been a year like no other, we have always believed that, at Oak Grove, we have the very best school. Time and again over the past 12 months, our families have been there to cheer us on and carry us through even the most challenging times. You constantly reminded us “just let us know if you need anything”. We want to thank the PTA for the dedication you show, and, most recently, for the delicious lunch and generous gift you gave the staff on Friday.

Ms. Rhodes and I want to celebrate the amazing and heroic staff of professionals that we have the honor to work with at Oak Grove. The staff cares deeply for your children, and they have done incredible things to ensure your children receive the very best. Whether it was in-person or remote, the staff has been there every day to make connections, provide quality instruction, engage students in powerful learning, remain calm and flexible, and be the rocks of stability in an uncertain time. They are without equal, and I am so blessed to work with them.

Teachers will be on Winter Break and Tracking-Out, as well. Please allow them to enjoy this much-needed break by permitting them to disconnect from school responsibilities.

Please enjoy your holidays and the upcoming Track-out. Stay safe and healthy.

    All my best,

    Stephanie Bias, Principal

Hello, Oak Grove familyI hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  Many of you have already made your decision about Virtual Academy for the Spring.  You still have time to decide as the window closes on December 9. Hopefully you will find the Spring Learning Options Flowchart.pdf helpful. If you have additional questions, please remember that Ms. Rhodes, our Assistant Principal, is the Virtual Academy contact.

On Monday, December 7, Cohort 3/C 4th and 5th graders will finally have their week at school. If you are coming to school for the first time, we are so excited to see you. Please make sure you familiarize your family with our safety protocols. As always, masks are required for everyone on campus.  We also need everyone to make sure you are symptom-free when coming back to school. Finally, we are making sure to wash or sanitize our hands frequently. We have all worked together to keep Oak Grove safe.

We will not have an asynchronous day during the week of December 7.
