     September 15, 2019

    Dear Parent/Guardian,

In August of 2019, the North Carolina State Board of Education (SBE) adopted new Academic Achievement Levels and Descriptors for end-of-grade (EOG) and end-of-course (EOC) mathematics tests.

An Individual Student Report (ISR) of your student’s 2018–19 EOG mathematics test score was sent home with your child today (Track 2, 3, 4). As you review your student’s score report, remember the score on this test is only one indicator of how well your student is achieving, and should always be considered along with all other available information provided about your student.

In previous school years, the test has been reported using five Academic Achievement Levels; however, effective in August 2019, Achievement Levels are reported as shown below.

    Achievement Levels

    On-Grade-Level Standard

On Track for Career- and College-Readiness

Level 5 denotes comprehensive understanding of grade level content standards, are on track for career and college, and are prepared for advanced content at the grade/course.

    Yes

    Yes

Level 4 denotes a thorough understanding of grade level content standards and are on track for career and college.

    Yes

    Yes

Level 3 denotes sufficient understanding of grade level content standards though some support may be needed to engage with content at the next grade/course.

    Yes

    No

Not Proficient denotes inconsistent understanding of grade level content standards and will need support.

    No

If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s ISR, please contact Jo Tysor, Instructional Facilitator at 919-387-4490.

    Sincerely,

    Stephanie Bias

    Principal’s Otter Splash 9/13/19

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  It was great to have Track 2 back starting on Monday, September 9.

If you had a 3rd-5th grader last year, you should have received, by mail, score reports for the ELA EOG.  At the end of August, we received the number score, but not the complete score report.  Rather than just send home a number, we opted to wait on the complete report. We received those score reports on Friday afternoon around 4:30. So, please be on the lookout for the score report this week.

    Coming up this week:

On Monday, September 16, we will celebrate our Instructional Assistants on Tracks 2, 3, 4.  Hooray for our Awesome Instructional Assistants!!

Also on Monday, the PTA will sponsor another Otter Family Fun.  This month’s event will be from 4:00-5:00 at Jack Smith Park.

Also this week, Wake County Public Schools will be having a school safety assessment conducted on our campus. The School Safety Advocacy Council (SSAC) will conduct security assessments the week of September 16th-20th, 2019.  The assessments will include, but are not limited to:

    • physical security infrastructure
    • employee interviews
    • observing school arrival and dismissal procedures
    • security and life safety policies and procedures

We are thankful that WCPSS is carefully looking at safety procedures at all schools.  Please remember all our safety procedures (using the doorbell for entry, signing in at the office, having car tags displayed – just to name a few) when you visit our campus.

    Coming Soon:

Our Annual Book Fair will kick-off on September 23.  It will run through October 4, so all tracks will be able to participate.  Please be on the lookout for information coming soon.

We will have a PTA Meeting on Tuesday, September 24, from 4:15-5:00.  Then, the Book Fair will be open until 7:00 PM.  Please make plans to come out to support our PTA and the Book Fair.

Also, Oak Grove will host the Board Advisory Council for district 8 (BAC 8) on Monday, September 23, at 6:30.  I want to say Thank you! to Sarah Stoeckel for agreeing to be our BAC representative.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

If you had a 3rd-5th grader last year, you should have received, by mail, score reports for the ELA EOG.  Score reports for math EOGs are coming soon to the school.  We have the number score, but not the complete score report.  Rather than just send home a number, we opted to wait on the complete report. As soon as we have these available, we will send them home.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful week!  I also hope everyone enjoys the long holiday weekend!  Please remember that there is no school on Monday, September 2, due to the Labor Day Holiday.

Our Curriculum Night for Tracks 3&4 will be on Tuesday, September 3.  Please mark your calendar for this upcoming event! We will have two sessions to accommodate families with more than one student.  Session 1 will be 5:30-6:10. We will make an announcement, and then Session 2 will be from 6:15-6:55.

    Coming up this week:

On Thursday, September 5, Track 1&4 Fourth Graders will be going to the North Carolina Museum of History and the Museum of Science.  Both are in downtown Raleigh, and this is a terrific field trip.

On Friday, September 6, Track 3&4 First Grade students will have an “in-house field trip” with Science Is Fun (Funky Forces).

Also, on Friday, September 6, Track 1 students will end their first quarter of the 19-20 school year.  They will also track out until October 1.

We will welcome back Track 2 on Monday, September 9.

Last Friday afternoon, WCPSS sent out policy regarding the use of a variety of technology in the school setting. Of important note is the district policy on Smart Watches.  According to policy: “Smart watches are allowed only if put on Airplane mode in order to disable text messages and phone calls from being received by the watch/device.  The watch is considered a cellphone UNLESS airplane mode is activated.”

Please help us by reminding our Otters that their Smart Watch should be in airplane mode while at school. Smart Watches are not considered part of our BYOD use.

We’ll look forward to seeing you all back to school on Tuesday, September 3.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful week!  If you are a Track 2 Family, we hope you enjoy your Track-out.  If you are on Track 3, we can’t wait to see you back on Monday, August 19!

Last week, on Tuesday evening, August 13, our Track 1&2 Teachers had a Family Curriculum Night.  We want to thank all the families that came out on Tuesday evening to hear all about the wonderful learning that will be happening for your Otter this year.

Our Track 3&4 Kindergarten students have a couple of notable events this week.  On Tuesday, August 20, the Kindergarten students will have a dental screening during the school day.  Then, on Friday, August 23, Kindergarten students on Track 3&4 have an in-house “field trip” with the Science is Fun group.

If you missed the change in the Oak Grove Birthday Celebration policy, I have included it below.  Thank you for the positive feedback we have received.  We will begin fully enforcing the change on this Tuesday, August 20.  Here is the new policy:

    BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT OAK GROVE

Celebrations are an important part of life. They are the time we honor our accomplishments, share our learning, and celebrate our success. The number of celebrations within a school are plentiful. However, when personal celebrations such as a student’s birthday are added in, they can quickly detract from the academic goals we have set forth. As much as we like celebrating birthdays with snacks, sweet treats, and balloons, these types of celebrations at Oak Grove are not considered safe options.

Our new birthday policy will allow parents to better manage their child's consumption of sugary treats, reduce exposure for students with life threatening allergies, and limit the disruption of valuable learning time.

If your child would like to bring a non-food treat to share on his/her birthday, please contact their teacher prior to that day for appropriate treats. Birthday treats may NOT be handed out in the cafeteria during lunch. You should make arrangements to distribute the treat during classroom time.  Simple alternatives like pencils, stickers, or participating in a Celebration Book Donation are preferred. Please do NOT have flowers or balloons delivered to the school as it is disruptive to the learning environment and are also considered not safe for the school environment.

Hello, Oak Grove family! This week we had the first day of school for Track 4. It was also staggered entry week for our Track 4 Kindergarten students. We can’t wait to welcome all of our Track 4 Kindergarten Otters to the first day of school on Monday, August 5!

As a reminder for all our Otter Families: please don’t forget that all transportation changes need to be in writing.  We also ask for a phone call to the main office, in case your child’s teacher doesn’t get the message. Questions about transportation (carpool, bus or walk zone) can be sent to Mr. Mason, our Assistant Principal.

Coming up next week: On Tuesday, August 6, our Track 1&2 Kindergarten students will have a dental screening. On Friday, August 9, Track 1&2 students will receive their first quarter interim reports.  Please look for those to come home with your student on Friday.

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We would like to wish our Track 3 families a wonderful summer Track-out!  See you in 3 weeks on August 19.

As a reminder: the first day of school for Track 4 will be Monday, July 29. We can’t wait to welcome our Track 4 Otters to the first day of school!!

For all of our returning Track 4 students: please make sure you know how you are going home.  Is it by bus, by van, by car, or by foot?  Or, are you supposed to stay for the YMCA?  So many possibilities, you can see why this is important information to know.  Don’t forget that all transportation changes need to be in writing.  However, we also ask for a phone call to the main office, in case your child’s teacher doesn’t get the message. Questions about transportation (carpool, bus or walk zone) can be sent to Mr. Mason, our Assistant Principal.

Coming up next week: On Tuesday, July 30, our first PTA Meeting of the year will be held at 4:15 in the Media Center.  Please come out and support your PTA!

Recently we had an important conversation about birthday celebrations at Oak Grove.  With the health and safety of our Otters in mind, we have revised the practice of birthday celebrations.  We definitely encourage you to celebrate your child’s birthday.  However, we are requesting that this be done with non-food items.  If you want to celebrate with food, it should only be for your child (lunch with your special Otter is a great in-school way to make the day special).  We will begin fully enforcing the change on Tuesday, August 20.  Here is the new policy:

Hello, Oak Grove family! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We have the cutest Kindergarten class in Wake County Public Schools!  Thank you to our amazing Kindergarten teachers

As a reminder: the first day of school for Track 4 will be Monday, July 29.

Carpool ran a little bit slower at the beginning of the week on Monday and Tuesday, but by the end of the week we were finished with carpool around 4:00.  Please continue to be safe and patient in the carpool line.  Also, please help your Otter learn their carpool number.  That will help the process a lot!

Questions about transportation (carpool, bus or walk zone) can be sent to Mr. Mason, our Assistant Principal.

Coming up next week: On Tuesday, July 23, our 3rd graders on Track 1, 2, 3 will be taking the Beginning of Grade test (also known as the BOG).  The BOG assessment is given to measure growth, and it is actually a test of end of third grade curriculum.  On Wednesday, July 24, the Ident-a-Kid program will be here to photograph your student on Track 1, 2, 3 (if you decide to participate).  Flyers were sent home last week.  Finally, on Friday, July 26, we will have “Meet the Teacher” for grades 1-5 on Track 4.  You can stop by any time between 12:30 and 2:00 to see your new Track 4 teacher.

The first PTA Meeting of the Year is coming up soon.  Mark your calendar for Tuesday, July 30, at 4:15 in the Media Center.
