    Principal’s Otter Splash 9/11/2020

Hello, Oak Grove familyOn Friday, we paused for a moment of silence in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance held every year since September 11, 2001. We appreciate all those who serve and keep us safe, especially including our first responders.

20th Day of School is Monday, September 14!

As a reminder, the 20th day of school is Monday, September 14.  Our teacher months of employment are based on the number of students enrolled as of the 20th day of school (most years it is based on the 10th day).  Everyday counts, and we want every student counted present on Monday. Please reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher if you experience technology issue that prevent you from attending a Google Meet.

    Progress Report Update:

Next Friday, September 18th you will receive a narrative progress report for your child(ren) by email.  This progress report will offer feedback about your child’s engagement and performance during synchronous and asynchronous instruction.

In an effort to provide our teachers with time to create a narrative progress report for each child in their classroom, we are offering them planning time on Wednesday, September 16th from 11:30 pm - 4:00 pm.  For your planning, students will not have live sessions with their homeroom teacher during this afternoon block.

What does this mean for families? Special education sessions and Specials classes will follow their normal schedule on Wednesday, September 16th.  Homeroom teachers will be offline working on reports. During this afternoon, your child may finish incomplete work, access Dreambox, online reading resources, or simply take a break. We appreciate your understanding and support in advance.

    Remote Learning Days (September 29 & 30):

Remote Learning Days are scheduled for September 29th and 30th.  These days will include recorded (asynchronous) activities for students to complete on their own schedule.  We will not have live instruction on Remote Learning Days.  Please remember that track out for students begins on Thursday October 1st.  We will report back for learning on Monday, October 19th. Report Cards for first Quarter will be issued on Friday, October 23.

    OGES School Library News:

The school library is open for curbside services!  Every Wednesday you can pick up and drop off library books from 8:30-9 and 11:30-1.  Reserve books by going to Follett Destiny in your child's WakeID Portal.  Watch the video on the library's website for more details: bit.ly/ogeslibrary

Hello, Oak Grove familyThank you to everyone for a wonderful first week of full instruction.  Were there glitches: YES!  Was is challenging: Absolutely!  Did we all stick in there to make it the best week: Without question or hesitation!!  Thank you to everyone who reached out to send a kind word to a staff member.  You see how hard everyone is working, and your acknowledgement helped us come back at it every day.  We want to thank all of you: parents, family members, instruction supervisors, and students.  We thank you for putting forth your best effort and trying your best in virtual learning.  In so many ways, we are not just surviving, but we are thriving.

Please remember that Monday, September 7, is Labor Day.  There will be no school on Monday.

The PTA will have a General Membership meeting on September 17 at 6:00 PM.  Please mark your calendars!

    Attendance and Participation:

Our main way of counting attendance will be through students attending a Google Meet.  If you are unable to attend due to connection (WiFi problems) or lack of technology, please send your teacher an email or message through Remind/Talking Points every day before 10:00. They will respond by 12:00.  If your child has an appointment or is sick, just like when we are in the building, please send a note.  If we do not hear from you or see your student, we will have to mark an unexcused absence for that day.  We really want your student to be present every day, as every day of school is important!

Most first, second and third grader Otters are working on growing their technology skills, while our Kindergarten students are just now being exposed. Any fourth and fifth grade Oak Grove student should be quite adept at navigating a laptop and the learning platforms we use. All our teachers are fluent in a variety of technology skills which are implemented in the classroom with their students. With all of this in mind, we ask that you allow for your child to independently navigate virtually without you (as the adult) over their shoulder. Our teachers are professionals and take pride in the various trainings and professional development they have had to support your child through this process. Please trust us. We will do all we can to make sure your child is learning and able to do the necessary assignments; but the first two weeks have been “orientation” and it is our job to make sure students can maneuver through independently - without a parent/guardian. Thank you for allowing us to grow your child.

If you completed the technology survey from WCPSS, you will be contacted by WCPSS for a date to pick up your device. WCPSS sent out a message that they will have 3 distribution dates during the week of August 31: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 4 pm.

    New Year, New Calendar!

The 20-21 school calendar for Multi-Track Year Round schools has been amended to follow the Track 4 calendar (found here).  All tracks will follow this calendar for the 20-21 school year.  If changes are made to the calendar, it will be communicated by WCPSS and would not happen until the beginning of second semester. To the extent possible, we will honor your assigned track from 20-21 for the 21-22 school year (we are hopeful that we will be able to go back to multi-track year round for 21-22).

    Supply Lists:

School supplies are posted on our website if you did not receive a supply list from your teacher.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    • Who is our Virtual Academy Contact?
    • What will the daily schedule look like?

You can find our general school schedule on our website under “Virtual Learning Schedule”.

    • What does “live instruction” (synchronous) look like?
      •  In general, instruction is considered “live” if it (1) allows for the teacher and students to interact with each other in real time, and (2) is focused on furthering a learning goal.

                           Examples of “Live” Instruction

    • Scheduled  Collaborative Activities using digital tools
    • Peer feedback and collaboration activities where the teacher is also involved and providing feedback (example: using the comment feature in Google Docs to provide feedback).
    • Discussion Questions / Forums moderated by the teacher
    • Brief mini lessons through Google Meet to introduce a module of learning.
    • Google Meet Chats (Whole Class or Small Group)
    • How will Virtual Academy students be integrated with the school?
      • Ensuring that we are all still connected as one school family was one of many reasons, our school leadership team selected the teaching and learning model that maintains class lists with both VA and Plan B students. Students will all have virtual opportunities to all connect, regardless of Plan B or VA. Teachers will clearly communicate with parents weekly, much like we have done in the past.  Parents should expect that all teachers on a grade level will work together to plan and implement instruction both online and face to face.  Of course, this will be new territory for us and we will need to be flexible and creative in determining what this will look like over time.
    • Will kids have specials?
      • Students will continue to have specials classes.

    Principal’s Otter Splash 8/7/2020

Hello, Oak Grove familyI can’t believe we are starting the 2020-21 school year in just about one week!  I truly hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and have enjoyed time with family and friends.  I recognize that the transition back to school can be especially challenging this year, both for families in Transition Plan B and the Virtual Academy.  While we don’t have all the answers and our world is ever-changing, extending grace is crucial in keeping a positive community. Armed with a supportive parent community, a dedicated staff, and an incredible group of students, I know we will have a great year!  We are in this together and can’t wait to make many memories this year!

Virtual Academy and Plan B Updates:

Oak Grove ended the enrollment period with over 60% of students registered for Virtual Academy. This is consistent with WCPSS averages for elementary schools.  Your child’s teacher will be contacting you via email concerning your child’s class assignments on Monday, August 10th by 5:00 PM.  Great care and a considerable amount of time has gone into establishing class lists that provide the best learning environment for students. This painstaking, collaborative approach would be disrupted if changes were allowed to be made after these lists were finalized. Therefore, no changes will be made at this time. Thank you for your understanding.

***There is always the possibility that new classroom assignments for some students may be necessary after the beginning of the school year, due to unforeseen changes.

In the email from teachers, you will receive information about class supply lists.  The supply lists will also be posted to our website by 5:00 on Monday, as well.  Later in the week, your child’s teacher will also send information about Meet the Teacher, Drive Through Distribution of Supplies, and a daily instructional schedule.

    Technology:

If you completed the technology survey from WCPSS, you will be contacted by WCPSS for a date during the week of August 17 to pick up your device(s).  Device distribution will be a centralized location across the county, and it will not happen at Oak Grove.

    Daily Schedule at Oak Grove:

By Friday, August 14, you will receive a grade-level specific daily schedule.  In general, we will be following our normal bell schedule (9:15-4:00).  All students will have 11:30-1:00 device-free lunch and “get up & move” time. Synchronous learning will be comprised about 2-3 hours of the day.  Students will have about 2-3 hours of time that will be asynchronous instruction. Students will have daily specials that will be about 20 minutes.

First Two Weeks (beginning August 17):

During the week of August 17, we have planned activities to work with families to provide time to build relationships and establish a strong classroom community.  Teachers will also be working with their class to teach expectations for synchronous and asynchronous learning and provide strategies for implementing digital tools. On Monday and Tuesday, August 17 and 18, we are planning “Meet the Teacher” activities.  We will also have opportunities for students to begin navigating their Google Classroom. On Wednesday and Thursday, August 19 and 20, we will have Drive Through Distribution here at Oak Grove for children to meet their teacher in person (from a distance) and receive some needed supplies provided by WCPSS. We will share the specifics of the schedule for the first week soon.

During the week of August 24, teachers will begin some instruction with their students based on developmentally appropriate levels and proficiency with digital tools. We will continue building our classroom communities and setting expectations.

On August 31, you can expect full implementation of our daily schedule.

    Supply Lists:

School supplies will be posted on our website by 5:00 on Monday, August 10.

We need to hear from you!

If you are planning on leaving Wake County Public School System for the 2020-21 school year, whether it be out of county, out of state, or to a charter/private/religious school, please email our Data Manager, Mrs. Dahlhoff at adahlhoff@wcpss.net informing us of this change.  Please include in the letter your child(ren)’s name, track, current grade and teacher, and the place you are moving and/or the school your child(ren) will be attending.  This information is helpful as we plan for next school year.  Please feel free to email any questions you may have.

    How can you help?

I’ve had many conversations with families over the past month.  You have been abundantly kind and supportive.  One question that has consistently been asked is: how can I help?  For right now, I ask you to stay informed. Please read everything that WCPSS sends out to you.  The second thing I ask is that you continue to be supportive of the community and staff of Oak Grove.  We are an amazing family.  Your support and kindness during and through all of this is more help than you know.   Once I have more specific ways to help, I’ll let you know.  I know that I can count on you to meet whatever need we might have.  You simply are the best community and school family!

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. Ms. Rhodes and I are here to support you and your family.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    • Who is our Virtual Academy Contact?
    • What will the daily schedule look like?
      • Our school leadership team is still fine tuning our daily schedule for both Plan B students and online instruction. To give you an idea of what online learning could look like, here is a district example:
    •  schedule schedule 2

**It is of note that the sample schedule is the same for Plan B (Transition and Blended) and Virtual Academy. All students who engage in remote learning, either through Virtual Academy or Plan B, will receive 2.5 hours of “live” remote instruction a day.

    Principal’s Otter Splash 7/24/2020

Hello, Oak Grove family!  It has been 6 weeks since the end of year Otter Splash! We miss our Otter Family, and we hope everyone is staying healthy and safe!

    Virtual Academy Updates:

Oak Grove currently has a little over 50% of students registered for Virtual Academy. This is consistent with WCPSS averages for elementary schools.  If you have registered for VA and you need to change your registration, please email Ms. Rhodes, our Assistant Principal, (lrhodes@wcpss.net) or Ms. Dahlhoff, our Data Manager (adahlhoff@wcpss.net) to indicate the change.  Someone from the school will call you.

If you have not registered for Virtual Academy, but you would like to register, you still have time.  The new registration window opens on Monday, July 27.  The application will close on July 29 at 5 PM. You can find the application here: https://www.wcpss.net/virtual-academy

If you need more information about Virtual Academy, you can visit the VA website here: https://www.wcpss.net/domain/17137

    Technology Survey:

We need all families with a student in K-12 to complete this survey for each student, regardless of your school, whether you have applied to the Virtual Academy, whether you have a device or whether you need a device. (Pre-K students’ technology will be addressed separately by the Office of Early Learning.) This short survey will help us better understand the needs of our students and make sure that we are able to meet those needs. The survey will not be available from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday due to network maintenance.

We need to hear from you!

    Beginning of the Year Preparations:

Monday, August 3, will be the first teacher workday for our amazing staff for the 20-21 school year.  Our staff will have 10 days to prepare for the start of the year. We will be having conversations about Meet the Teacher, school supply lists (including Virtual Academy supplies), and many other beginning-of-year conversations.  The best part about having 10 days is our teacher can meet extensively as PLTs to ensure an amazing experience for your students.

    How can you help?

I’ve had many conversations with families over the past month.  You have been abundantly kind and supportive.  One question that has consistently been asked is: how can I help?  For right now, I ask you to stay informed. Most likely, in some form, Meet the Teacher for grades 1-5 will happen at the end of July. We will not schedule a meeting with next year’s teacher before we receive complete guidance from WCPSS.

    School Closing:

We held three full days last week to pick up items left behind at school.  At this time, we are not planning any additional dates.  Items still left at school will be carefully stored and available when we re-open in August.

    Principal’s Otter Splash 5/29/2020

Hello, Oak Grove family!  We miss seeing your faces, and hope you are well!

On Thursday, May 28, Track 1 families should have received final grade reports from your child’s teacher.  Track 1 will have their last day of school this Thursday, June 4.  On that same day (June 4), Track 2, 3, & 4 families will receive their final grade reports. The last day of the 19-20 school year is Thursday, June 11. Although this year is not ending as we anticipated, please know that our Otter community is strong, and our love for our school, our students, our staff, and our families is unending despite our current circumstances.

Please know that our families and our staff will be tracked out for most of the month of June.  As soon as we know more about what the 20-21 school year will look like, we will share more information. The Wake County School Board is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, June 2, to vote on the proposed calendar for the 20-21 school year.  Once that becomes official, we will have a better idea about beginning of year dates such as “Meet the Teacher”. We hope to have resources to share with families about available summer learning activities (Dreambox, Letterland, etc.) Finally, once the plan of how to reopen schools in a safe manner becomes finalized, we will share that with you all.

    School Closing Plan:

Please mark your calendar for June 1&2 as the dates to retrieve items left at school. Information about the specifics of the plan can be found here: https://bit.ly/2Zyffqi

    5th Grade Moving Up!

Details were shared on May 22nd  with 5th grade families about our Moving Up plans. We have been able to establish dates and times for our “Socially Distanced” Fifth Grade Promotion Ceremony.  We will hold the car parade (with all the excitement, cheering, and applause we can muster) in our carpool loop on Wednesday, June 3, for Track 1 at 10:00 AM. For Track 2, 3, and 4, your ceremony will be on Wednesday, June 10. Track 4 will be 9:30, Track 3 at 10:30 and Track 2 at 1:00. Families will remain in their vehicles the entire time, and our staff will be safely separated.

    Message from Mr. Mason:

Dear Oak Grove Families and Students,

It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you I will no longer be your assistant principal as of June 30th, 2020. My wife and I have made the very difficult decision to move closer to family, back to my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. We have two beautiful daughters and want nothing more than to watch them grow up with all the love and experiences of being near family. I will forever cherish the past eleven years I have spent working in Wake County. Even more, I will forever cherish the four years I have spent as your assistant principal here at Oak Grove. This is a very special place and it is because of you – the families and students – that make it so exceptional. The memories I have made here helping our amazing teachers and staff educate all of your bright and gifted “otters” will never be forgotten.

Please, be safe and take care of one another. I will miss you all!

    Mr. Mason

Mr. Mason is irreplaceable, and we will miss him so much!  We are working right now on finding a new Assistant Principal that will quickly become part of our school family.  We would like to hear from you about what you would like to see in our next Assistant Principal.  Please go to this link: https://forms.gle/sFQ5yni7g9cuKeeC7 to complete a Google form about our next AP.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions.  Mr. Mason and I are here to support you and your family.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
