• Special Otter Splash: Mid-Week Virtual Academy Registration Reminder

Posted by Stephanie Bias on 12/2/2020 5:30:00 PM

    Good Evening Oak Grove Families,

As you know, the registration for spring semester learning options opened today. The email should have come from WCPSS School Messenger with a link to the registration. We created the attached flowchart to assist you as you consider your options for next Spring. It is important that you make the decision that is best for your family, and not involve staff in this decision-making process. Also be aware that once the window closes, all decisions are final. We have no way of predicting the outcome of parent choices; therefore, we are unable to tell you at this time if your child's teacher will remain the same. Staff assignments will be made after the window closes, as noted in the text at the bottom of the flowchart. Finally, please make note of the hyperlinks within the flowchart that redirect you to the WCPSS page with detailed information about the options.

    With gratitude,

    Stephanie Bias

    Principal’s Otter Splash 11/27/2020

Hello, Oak Grove familyI hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Like many of you, we kept our celebration very small. As a result, we created new memories that will always recall the simple joys of our little family. I hope your holiday was likewise joyful and safe.

On Monday, November 30, Cohort 2/B 4th and 5th graders will begin. Cohort 3/C 4th and 5th graders will come the week of December 7. If you are coming to school for the first time, we are so excited to see you. Please make sure you familiarize your family with our safety protocols. As always, masks are required for everyone on campus.  We also need everyone to make sure you are symptom-free when coming back to school. Finally, we are making sure to wash or sanitize our hands frequently. We have all worked together to keep Oak Grove safe.

The week of November 30, we will be sending out school picture information. We will have in-person and remote-student opportunities to have school pictures taken during the week of December 7.

We will have an asynchronous day during the week of November 30. On December 2, there will be no students on campus and all learning will be asynchronous.

Finally, this week, the window for Spring enrollment for Virtual Academy opens on December 2. The window will be open until December 9, and additional information will come from WCPSS. If you are happy with your current school decision (in-person or year-long VA), then you don’t have to do anything. However, this is the time for those of you who wish to make a change. If you have additional questions, please remember that Ms. Rhodes, our Assistant Principal, is the Virtual Academy contact.

In-Person Families ACTION REQUESTED for Carpoolers for a smooth arrival & dismissal

    • Adults stay in car at all times with car running
    • Please remember to “snake” through the parking lot to keep cars off Penny Road. If the carpool drive is full, please turn right to go around through the parking lot.
    • Please have your carpool number displayed both during arrival and dismissal
    • If it’s a cold morning, please turn down the heat and remove hats and hoods.  Too much warmth in your car could lead to an inaccurate temperature check at screening.

    • Students should be seated in the back passenger seat (right side of the car) upon arrival; and will be placed in the back passenger seat at dismissal
    • Students should have backpack/personal items ready

Hello, Oak Grove familyThis week, it felt like everyone came back!  We had all our in-person K-3 and Regional Program students.  We also had Cohort 1 of 4th and 5th grade. That made for around 200 children, and school felt full of life. It was a joy to see all our children this week. Friday was my birthday, and your children were so kind in the many ways they made my day special through singing, dancing, cards, and kind words.  We have the best little Otters!

Also, on Friday, November 20, Q2 Interim Reports will go home with students.

On Monday, November 30, Cohort 2/B 4th and 5th graders will begin. Cohort 3/C 4th and 5th graders will come the week of December 7.

On November 23 and 24, students will not be on campus.  We will provide live instruction for all students following our normal schedule.  However, all instruction will be virtual for those two days.  November 25-27 is Thanksgiving Break.

The week of November 30, we will be sending out school picture information. We will have in-person and remote student opportunities to have school pictures taken during the week of December 7.

    Principal’s Otter Splash 11/13/2020

Hello, Oak Grove family!  We have had a wonderful three weeks of rotation through Cohort 1, 2, and 3 of our K-3 and Regional Program Students.  It has been such a joy to have students back in the building. This Friday, November 20, Q2 Interim Reports will go home with students.

On Monday, November 16, we will welcome back all In-Person K-3 and Regional Program Students.

At the same time, it’s finally our 4th and 5th graders’ turn to come back to in-person.  Cohort 1/A 4th and 5th graders will begin on November 16. Cohort 2/B 4th and 5th grade will come on November 30. Cohort 3/C 4th and 5th graders will come the week of December 7.

Preparing your child for the return to school

    1. Practice wearing a mask.  Please see the information that came from WCPSS on Friday, October 16, in the Student Accountability and Required Health Protocols.  There is a form to return to school (you can send it to Ms. Dahlhoff) at the end of that document.
    2. Practice waiting apart. While there will be some cases where 6 feet will not be practical, we will practice waiting a distance from our friends during school.
    3. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. We will have hand sanitizer available throughout the school, but handwashing is also essential.

What to expect for In-Person Students:

    • This will not be school like it used to be. We will still focus on building relationships and engaging every student, but our movement, activities, and interaction will be more limited because of safety precautions.
    • Governor Cooper has approved the return of students under Plan A, which includes important safety measures, such as face coverings, social distancing, symptom screening and cleaning but does not require schools to reduce the number of children in the classroom.
    • Social distancing will be a priority, but students and staff will not always be six feet apart. Once all students in Plan B return to school, some spaces will not be big enough to ensure six-foot social distancing. Also, there are times when six-foot social distancing would not allow the teacher to adequately supervise all students. For example, 20 students in a class with six-foot social distancing would equal a 120' line; 30 students would lead to a 180' line. There is no way to have such a long line in most classrooms, and the teacher would not be able to supervise the end of such a line in the hallway. When social distancing is not feasible, teachers will focus on preventing students from facing each other.
    • School staff will ensure the students are wearing their face coverings at all times when they are not eating, drinking, or taking a face covering break following these guidelines.
    • If your child becomes ill at school, families will be notified and must immediately pick up their child. The child may not ride the bus or be transported by a staff member. This means that families without transportation will need to find a way to pick up their child.
    • Children may not return to school until these criteria are met. Note that the guidelines for returning to school are different depending on the circumstances.
    • The guidelines for Plan B students could change over time as guidance changes. Plan B could become more or less restrictive.

Update on School Meals for the 2020-21 School Year

Breakfast and lunch will be free for all students during the 2020-21 school year. Students will not need to provide their student ID in order to get a meal. Meals are limited to one breakfast and one lunch per student per day.

To keep your child safe, all menu items will be individually packaged and handed directly to the child. Students will not have the ability to serve themselves as they have in the past. Condiments and utensils will be included with the meal, and students will not be picking these items out of a shared bin.

Child Nutrition Services operates under health and safety guidelines outlined by DHHS, USDA, NCDPI, and OSHA. Now more than ever, it is our utmost priority to provide nutritious meals to our students under the highest safety standards.

Student Accountability and Required Health Protocols:

WCPSS students, families, and employees have a collective responsibility to create and maintain a safe and healthy learning and work environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this responsibility includes every student and employee taking affirmative steps to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 by strictly adhering to the health safety protocols set forth in the Student Accountability and Required Health Protocols document.

Plan B Families: Please make sure to sign and return the last page to Ms. Dahlhoff (adahlhoff@wcpss.net) or your child’s teacher.

    Health Precautions

Please see all the information in the OGES Return to Campus guide that pertains to health precautions.  Some highlights from that document include:

    • Temperature checks and COVID question screening for all students arriving on campus.
    • Dedicated Care Center on campus for any student feeling sick at school. Students will be required to be picked up from school if they need to go to the Care Center.
    • Requesting that all families keep sick students at home. Any symptom could be cause for concern at school, so we are asking that families make sure children are well before sending them to school.

    • Remote Learning/Virtual Academy (K-3rd) Students:
      • Starting on Monday, October 26th, Specials will be asynchronous for virtual students learning at home. The instructional content and activities will be housed in Google Classroom. Specialists will be available for office hours to give students and families support and attention to complete any tasks.  We want to keep our relationships strong with our specialists.
    • 4th & 5th Grade:
      • The specials schedule will remain the same until they transition back into the building. Students will access live 20 minute Google Meets each day.

    OGES Return to Campus Guide:

We have created a helpful guide to assist you with all the information you may need for returning to campus.  You can find the Return to Campus Guide here: https://bit.ly/2H3m2Sh Please take some time to read through all the updates.

    Cohort Assignments

Cohort Assignments were communicated to families on Wednesday, October 7, through School Messenger.  If you did not receive your cohort assignment, please contact Ms. Dahlhoff (adahlhoff@wcpss.net). You can see an easy-to-follow calendar here:

    Cohort 1 Calendar

    Cohort 2 Calendar

    Cohort 3 Calendar

    Asynchronous Learning Days

The School Board also approved the inclusion of an additional Remote Learning/Asynchronous day for each week when there is not already an interruption to the week. This applies to both Plan B and Virtual Academy students.

Upcoming Asynchronous Days are: October 21, October 28, November 3, November 18, December 2, and December 16.  We will also have Remote Learning Days on November 23-24 and December 21-22. Finally, as a reminder, November 11 is a holiday.

    2. Practice waiting 6 feet apart. It’s a good idea to help students learn to visualize 6 feet.
    3. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. We will have hand sanitizer available throughout the school, but handwashing is also essential.

    Updated Plan for Specials Classes:

We are excited to welcome back our first cohort of students! In order to accommodate both our in person and virtual learners, we have made some changes to our Oak Grove Specials Schedule

    • Plan B (In-person) Students:
      • Starting on Monday, October 26th, Specials will be live for our K - 3rd grade in person students and our regional programs. Most specials will happen in the classroom. PE will take place outside or in the multipurpose room.

    Continuity is a Key Component

To provide an equitable educational experience for your child(ren) in both an in person and virtual setting, we have adopted a concurrent teaching model. Students will still be assigned the same homeroom teacher and may be assigned a “bonus” teacher. Teachers will be working collaboratively to support their students in both settings, while maintaining strong and meaningful relationships with their homeroom class. In some cases, one buddy teacher will handle online instruction (cohort rotations and VA) and one will handle the in-person instruction. In other cases, teachers may be departmentalizing, or sharing instruction throughout the day. VA students will also have “bonus” teachers in many cases.

As students transition back into the classroom, they will be greeted by a team of teachers and learn with familiar peers and some new students, too! Our students accessing instruction remotely will also work with a team of teachers and a combined class of students, while maintaining their current online schedule.

This concurrent teaching model allows teachers the flexibility to differentiate instruction and support students through strategic groups all while putting the social and emotional needs of your child(ren) first.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. Ms. Rhodes and I are here to support you and your family.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Students who attend the WCPSS Virtual Academy will remain in the Academy through the end of the first semester.

In October, families will have an opportunity for students to register for the WCPSS Virtual Academy for the second semester only. The registration window would allow:

The details of how this will happen will be shared prior to students coming back on October 26.
