Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Wendy Dierk
I have taught first grade in Wake County schools since 2004. Before becoming a classroom teacher, I was a preschool teacher and director for 12 years, and a kindergarten and first grade Teacher Assistant for 3 years. In my first career, I worked with adults, teaching and providing hotline support for a high-level (in the 1980’s!) computer language, a career I chose to leave in order to spend more time with my then growing family. I’ve done a lot of things, but the common thread is that I have always been teaching! I have a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Campbell University and I am National Board Certified.
My husband, Bob, and I have three grown children. Our oldest daughter, Jessica, teaches first grade at Sycamore Creek Elementary in Raleigh. Our son, Nate, is a software engineer who lives in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. Our youngest daughter, Christie, is pursuing a PhD. in Human Computer Interaction at University of California – Berkeley. I’m a North Carolina native who married a Jersey boy (who graduated from NC State, so it’s all good!). We lived in Florida for the first five years of our marriage, but have been back here (where we belong) ever since. I love to see other places, but there’s no place like home!
I have an affinity for six- and seven-year-olds and enjoy being a part of my young students’ lives. I especially love early literacy learning and work to create a safe and inviting learning environment where reading and writing are cherished. I have been a National Writing Project Fellow and a writing trainer for WCPSS, as well as a Teacher Advisor for Scholastic Reading Clubs and active for a number of years in the WCPSS ELA/SS Focus Group, a group that works with our District Literacy Coordinators on curriculum for reading, writing, and social studies. I also worked at the district level in a Math Focus group to align first grade math curriculum to Common Core objectives.
Outside of school, I love working in my yard, going to concerts, eating out, and traveling to see my children. It’s a rare treat these days to get all three of them in the same place at the same time, and when that happens, I am in heaven!
I love school, too. Learning is a fun adventure, and I look forward to seeing where my students take me each year!
