40 Book Challenge
Students and staff are challenged to read 40 books over the course of the school year. They are encouraged to read from a variety of genres in order to develop an understanding of literary elements, text features, and text structures. Students are rewarded over the year for reaching milestones in the 40 book challenge.
Character Education
Wake County Public School System defines the Character Education program as a national movement aimed at creating schools that foster ethical, responsible, and caring young people by modeling and teaching good character through an emphasis on universal values that we all share. At RMS, we believe these positive character traits contribute to a strong school environment that leads to academic and personal success of our students. Each month, we will recognize these students who demonstrate a positive character trait with a breakfast celebration and invite their parents to attend.
September: Responsibility October: Respect November: Courage December: Kindness January: Self-Discipline February: Integrity March: Perseverance April: Good Judgment May: Any trait Climbers Honor Roll
As educators and parents, we know that growth and improvement are just as important as high performance when it comes to long-term success. Students on each team at RMS are recognized as part of the Climbers Honor Roll if they have improved in at least one class from one quarter to the next, without lowering their grades in any other classes or earning Ds or Fs. Students who meet this high standard will receive a certificate from their core teachers at the end of the second and third quarters.
Honor Roll
We celebrate the high academic performance of students on a quarterly basis using the grades on their report cards. Students who earn a 3.0-3.9 grade point average are celebrated for being on the A/B Honor Roll, and those with a perfect 4.0 GPA are announced as part of the A Honor Roll. These are both calculated by converting all quarter letter grades into "quality points" (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) and finding the average for the quarter.
Quarterly Student Track Recognition
At the end of each academic quarter, teachers present specialized awards in addition to recognizing those students who qualify for the Climbers Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, and A Honor Roll. These may include Perfect Attendance, Student of the Month, Subject Student of the Quarter (e.g, Outstanding Language Arts Student), and Twenty-First Century Character Awards. Core teams will conduct a brief awards ceremony each quarter to present these awards.
