• Purpose

    North Carolina Mathematics Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College is a year-round program that is offered to students in grades 6-12 who possess a high interest in the areas of Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology.  The ultimate goal of the program is for students to attend a four-year college/university and to major in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or education field.

    Goal

    The goal of the NC-MSEN program is to broaden the pool of students who are prepared to pursue university-level majors that lead to careers in mathematics, science, technology, engineering, and teaching.  Students must fall in ONE of the categories below to be considered for membership into the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program.

    • The student’s grades (a “C” or 2.0 average or better is required) and
    • Outstanding student’s conduct and behavior and
    • Students with evidence of leadership abilities and
    • Students who belong to first-generation college families or
    • Students with substantial family and/or financial responsibilities or
    • Students that show high interest in math or science

    Expectations

    All students are required to participate in the Saturday Academy that is held on the campus of North Carolina State University.  Students who participate in the club are required to attend 6 Saturday Academy meetings in the fall including the Mini-Runoff which is the last Saturday in the spring.  All other middle school students and all high school students are required to attend 11 Saturday Academy meetings in the fall and spring which also includes the Mini-Runoff.  Students should also participate in the Summer Scholars Program, statewide math and science competitions (MSEN Day), field trips and the Awards Ceremony in order to receive the maximum experience from the program.

    **Parents of the students who participate in the program are required to attend monthly parent meetings.  Students and parents must be willing to attend ALL of our program events.
