English as a Second Language. That's what ESL stands for and my Master's degree is in TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Acronyms play a big role in my job. My simple explanation when asked about my role as a teacher: All of my students speak another language at home. This job brings the world to me, which perfectly suits someone with wanderlust. As a relatively new bride (3 years) and step-mother to three amazing teenage daughters, traveling has taken a bit of a backseat. I absolutely feel like I now have the best of both worlds!
My teaching experience includes elementary ESL, middle school Language Arts for ESL students, high school English, teaching English to international adults at Wake Technical Community College and living in Southeastern China for two years, where I taught English to Chinese university students. It's easy to see that I thrive on change and variety. Working with K-5 LEP (Limited English Proficient) students here at Oak Grove provides me with an excellent overview of what my students need to succeed as 21st century learners. There is always something new to learn.
I am honored to be a member of the Oak Grove family. Go Otters!
