Ms. Andrea Huovinen
My name is Andrea Huovinen and I have been the Art teacher at Oak Grove Elementary for four years. I have loved Art all of my life beginning as a kid who spent countless days outside drawing, painting and creating mud masterpieces with friends in the backyard. I grew up in Richmond, Virginia and attended Virginia Commonwealth University where I earned a BFA in Art Education. During my college years I began to travel around the world, amazed at the variety of cultures and landscapes which further inspired me as an artist and global citizen. After a summer studying in Italy, I realized how important the arts were for connecting us to each other, despite language and cultural differences. This inspiration led me to pursue a career as an educator. Upon graduation,I began my journey as a teacher in Richmond. I taught for 5 years at Westhampton Day School and a year at Richmond City Schools. In 2001, I met my husband Heath. We share a love of music and the outdoors which brought us to the beautiful mountains near Boone,North Carolina. During the 9 years we lived there, we had two beautiful children,August and Henry. After my children were born, I continued teaching Elementary Art for Washington County public schools in southwestern Virginia for 4 years. Then, following a move from one mountain to another, I began teaching in Ashe County public schools for another 4 years. When my husband was offered a job at NC state we moved from the mountains to begin our next life adventure here in Raleigh were we are today! Leaving the mountains was a bittersweet experience, but finding a new "teaching home"at Oak Grove has made it all the sweeter. I feel so lucky to have a job in such a warm and nurturing environment that allows me to share my love of creativity and the arts with children.
