My dream of becoming a teacher started in the second grade. I began working with students as soon as I could, babysitting and helping in our church nursery. My internships in the classroom began my junior year of high school. After high school, I attended Appalachian State University, where I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. After graduating I moved to Raleigh and began teaching at a traditional calendar school. I taught third grade my first year and then moved to fifth. I have taught fifth grade ever since. I love working with fifth grade students and getting to know them as a student and person. Fifth grade is an important year for students as it holds a lot of changes. I love being a part of student's fifth grade year and helping them navigate through these changes as they become young adults. I have always believed that it is just as important to teach students skills about life as it is to teach academics. As a fifth grade team, we work closely together, collaborating on new and innovative ways to teach students.
I met my husband the summer before our senior year of high school. We dated for seven years and were married in 2012. On June 26, 2017, my husband and I welcomed our first child into the world, a son, Gaither Charles Hefner. Outside of school, we love spending time with family and friends. We also enjoy traveling, trying new restaurants and attending NC State football and basketball games.
I am proud to work with Oak Grove student's and to be part of the Otter family.
