Welcome Smith IB/PYP Magnet Elementary School!

    Greetings, Smith Magnet Elementary families!

As we approach the halfway point of this school year, there are many exciting programs, events and activities happening here at Smith. Our students and staff continue to be very busy, both in and outside of the classrooms.

The new EL curriculum that our third, fourth and fifth graders are working with has been well received. We have seen positive gains on the first benchmarks after implementing the program.

Our fifth graders are already preparing for Exhibition in the spring. If your child is a fifth grader, be sure to talk with them about Exhibition plans.

Smith was recently recognized as a PBIS Green Ribbon Award recipient. We are proud of our entire Smith family for working together to support positive behavior.

The Asia mural on the third grade hallway is finished and it looks spectacular! Be sure to look for the mural, as well as our other continent displays, when you have the opportunity.

The response to the “Readvolution” partnership with The Carolina Hurricanes has been amazing! As I write this, our students have read over 3,700 books. Ten families have received tickets to a Hurricanes game. We have also had several students submit essays as part of this partnership and we are sure the students’ work will represent Smith well.

Helping Hands, a mentoring program for boys, is up and running and looking forward to a good year. New to SMES this year is SWAG (Students With A Goal,) which is a mentoring program for our girls. Ms. Sie-Duke is excited about getting this program started and about the tutoring partnership that has been set up with volunteers from the Department of Justice.

Our Latin Dance Club and Show Choir wowed everyone with their holiday performances! What a joy to see the hard work and enthusiasm of these students and their leaders. We look forward to First Tee, our golf program as it gets going in the spring. Sign-ups for Girls on the Run will start after the break and we hope to have a good group of participants.

Our Smith family continues to reach out beyond our school walls as well. We raised over $500 to assist those who lost so much in the hurricanes this fall. “Read to Feed” runs through January 19. We hope our students are getting sponsors to help us meet our goals of helping families through Heifer International.

Finally, a note that student assignment strips will be going home with students on January 4, 2018. Please look carefully at these, as they have information about the school your child is assigned to for the 2018-2019 school year. Kindergarten registration also starts on January 4th. If you have a child, or know someone who does, who will be five years old by August 31 please complete registration as early as possible. Early registration helps us plan for next year.

We are excited about all of the great things going on as Smith and appreciate all of the support we receive from our families. We are stronger together!
