Music teacher Kip Caton believes in the old cliché, "It takes a village to raise a child;" however, she finishes the saying by adding, "Somewhere in the village, I am sure there is a drum keeping a steady beat."
Caton endorses the idea that an integrated arts program can ensure success for even the most reluctant learner. As a teacher for more than 20 years, Caton has observed that music helps children connect with their feelings and passions as they discover self-discipline, structure, and organization. She utilizes music education as a starting point to integrate various disciplines.
Her principal Mary Ann Giemza observed, "She uses maps and music in cultures to help students understand the diversity of social studies. Rhythm and cadence provide an opportunity to understand math. Technology is routinely used as a learning tool."
