Fox Road Elementary
Kim Hughes, a kindergarten teacher from Fox Road Elementary was picked as Wake County's Teacher of the Year and went on to be named North Carolina's 1999-2000 Teacher of the Year.
As state Teacher of the Year, she represented North Carolina in the National Teacher of the Year competition, served as a two-year advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education, and spent the year traveling as an educational ambassador for the teaching profession.
In recent years, Hughes has served as a voice for teachers in the school administration. She was one of several people who worked with Superintendent McNeal to organize a series of teacher forums and worked with a community effort to study ways to recruit and retain quality teachers for Wake County Schools.
Hughes has been very active in professional organizations, presenting at both the national and state conferences of the Association for the Education of Young Children. She served on the editorial board for the N.C. organization and has served as an officer of the N.Y branch. She has conducted a number of local and statewide workshops.
Hughes earned her BS from Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania and her MS from the State University of New York in Oswego.
