A Word of Thanks

June 18, 2003 - On behalf of the students and staff of Wake County's public schools, I want to thank the Wake County Board of Commissioners for showing the leadership and courage to provide the resources that will keep the Wake County Public School System moving forward. Wake County is fortunate to have such diligent, committed representatives guiding the county during a time of economic challenge and increased academic momentum.

The demands placed on Wake County's schools -- excellence in the classroom, fiscal responsibility, innovation and public engagement -- are placed there by a community that has high expectations even as it has rallied to support our schools. We will continue to honor our obligation to Wake's citizens by working even harder to leave no child behind.

In the coming weeks, we will report to you our academic progress in 2002-03, including our march toward having 95 percent of our third- and eighth-grade students at grade level and our first assessment against the guidelines established by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The initiatives supported by the county commissioners on June 16 will help us retain and recruit the best teachers, offer the strongest academic programs, and expand Project Achieve to propel more students toward excellence. Thanks to the community's support, we can continue moving forward. To all who support our schools with their voices, their time, and their resources; from all of us who serve Wake County's children; thank you.
