Threat Management by Assessment & Counseling (TMAC)
TMAC is a process for assessing and managing threats made by students within the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) of North Carolina. TMAC provides consistent guidelines for addressing all threats (verbal, physical, and written), even those made in jest, within the school system. This alternative may be offered to students who are recommended for long-term suspension as an alternative to the long-term portion of the suspension. The model includes:
- Standardized guidelines for determining the severity of threats
- Standardized procedures for managing different levels of threat
- The establishment of school-based TMAC team
- Standardized assessment protocols and management guidelines for use by TMAC team
- Integration of a structured behavioral intervention (within both the schools and community) for students who make threats
- Intensive and comprehensive training of school administrators, counselors, and staff as well as collaborating community agency officials
- On-going supervision and coordination of program implementation by trained staff
- Enhanced parent involvement in the procedures and recommendations.
