Alternative Counseling Education
Alternative Counseling Education (ACE) is a board approved alternative for long-term suspensions for students who violate policy 6429. An exception shall be made when a first infraction does not involve the distribution, sale, possession with intent to sell, or conspiracy to distribute or sell a substance prohibited by this policy, an alternative to long-term suspension shall be offered. This alternative may be offered one time to students during their school career unless an exception is made by the superintendent.
Pre-Approved Vendors
There are five pre-approved vendors:
- Duke Community Guidance Clinic (DCGC) (919-416-7200) provides comprehension evaluation, prevention, intervention, and education program for students with alcohol/drug problems.
- Families in Development (FIND) (919-872-7373)is a substance abuse education and counseling program for students and parents which is operated by the Pathways Counseling Center, a division of SouthLight, Inc.,
- First Step Services (919-833-8899) Psychiatric Services are provided by our staff psychiatrist on site. The psychiatrist has extensive training in substance abuse issues for adults and adolescents. She holds a certificate in Adolescent Psychiatry.
- Ridgeview Program (919-467-9995) is designed to educate families about the risks of substance abuse, improve decision making skills of teenagers and provide additional tools and support to parents as they prepare their teenagers for adulthood. The structure of Ridgeview's ACE program will combine parents and teens in multi-family classes as well as separate parent and teen classes.
- Turning Point:Youth and Family Counseling (Turning Point) (919-833-8894) offers a variety of structured counseling and education services for youth and families.
Students and parents may opt to seek services from an outside vendor to provide the Alternative Education and/or Counseling program. You will need to return the completed Outside Vendor Application to the Office of Student Due Process by the third day of the suspension for approval.
All forms for enrollment into ACE must be obtained from your principal.
