Wake County breaks ground for new Green Magnet Elementary
First-grader Davis, dressed warmly for the cold, winter morning, greeted Wake County and school leaders. “Today is a special day for us as we start to work on our new school,” Davis said. “Thank you for joining us today and helping us to celebrate this great event.”
Third-grader Zacchaeus introduced Moseley Architects as the school’s design team and Balfour Beatty as the construction manager for the 95,000 square foot school.
Principal Lisa Brown said the groundbreaking ceremony was an important moment for her school. “We have a building full of excited children, parents and a community who could not be happier that this event is finally happening,” Brown said. “It has been well earned by our children and parents.”
The school opened in the 1950’s on Six Forks Road in North Raleigh. The replacement school will have 46 teaching spaces and serve up to 664 students. The new school will be ready in August 2016.
Green recently became a magnet school emphasizing the development of leadership and character based on the principals of Dr. Stephen Covey in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Students speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony explained the 7 Habits: be proactive; begin with the end in mind; put first things first; think win-win; seek first to understand; synergize; and sharpen the saw.
Wake County Commission John Burns joined the students in talking about the 7 Habits at the ceremony. “This school and this project is an example of the way the people and the taxpayers of Wake County have decided to put first things first,” Burns said. “And the first thing we have to do as a county and as a people is to educate our children.”
The students put on hard hats and grabbed shovels to break ground for the new school. They filled shovels with dirt and smiled for the cameras as parents and teachers took pictures.
