Disability History and Awareness Month Promotes Understanding, Appreciation
Sept. 29, 2016
Teachers and students across Wake County will increase their understanding and appreciation of students with disabilities during the month of October as part of the annual Disabilities History and Awareness Month.
This year’s theme is “Uniquely Capable.” A host of activities and lessons will dispel stereotypes and demonstrate how people with disabilities can achieve success in all facets of life.
Special Education Services have provided resources to make participation easy for schools at every level. Wake County employees can find them here when logged into their Google accounts.
Schools are encouraged to post a daily inspirational quote in the cafeteria to prompt discussion, as well as share the daily quote on social media with a photo of students participating in a History and Awareness Month activity. (Be sure to use the hashtags #UniquelyCapable and/or #DisabilityAwareness !)
Activities include creating a banner and/or video highlighting this year’s theme and a quiz that corrects misunderstandings about people with disabilities.
Classroom teachers are encouraged to keep track of their participation. Those with the highest participation will be recognized at the end of the month.
