October is Disability History & Awareness Month!
Oct. 11, 2017
Participation in Disability History & Awareness Month has continued to grow every year in schools all across our district.
We hope to see that trend continue for the 6th annual commemoration!
Our theme for 2017 is “PossABILITIES,” emphasizing the abilities of all students.
This link provides all the information you'll want to share with all of your faculty and staff in order to promote multiple layers of awareness. In addition, we are excited to inspire informative district wide conversations by sharing a calendar of quotes, as well as lessons and activities, to facilitate daily discussions. Our plans focus on communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking as we come together through discussions, lessons, activities, social media, and school projects.
Be sure your school is engaged in the District Awareness Challenge and the DHAM Banner/Video School Project. The District Awareness Challenge allows all teachers and students of all grade levels to participate in awareness activities and compete to score points for their school.
The Banner/Video School Project gives each school an opportunity to show off your creativity and collaboration by designing a banner or short video (30 seconds or less) to demonstrate how your school incorporates the essence of the WCPSS theme for 2017. Schools participating in the District Awareness Challenge will be recognized as gold, silver, or bronze winners based on the number of points earned, and the region with the highest number of participating schools will receive district-wide recognition. Schools may also receive gold, silver, or bronze recognition for submissions entered in the Banner/Video School Project contest. See last year’s winning participants.
As your school participates throughout the month of October, please feel free to use our Twitter hashtag, #PossABILITIES, and tag @WCPSS, @WCPSSteam, @WCPSS_SES, your school, and your region, to share our daily quotes and wonderful pictures of DHAM in action at your school. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Velinda Prince (vprince@wcpss.net) or Pam Doak
