Internship Responsibilities
Student Intern
The Student Intern:
- Completes the Internship Application form and submits it to the Career Development Coordinator
- Discusses reasons for participating in the internship program with the Career Development Coordinator
- Arranges for a certified staff sponsor (mentor teacher)
- Interviews for and accepts an internship job
- Completes the required hours (90 or 180)
- Plans and completes a project
- Keeps a daily journal
- Evaluates the internship experience
- Writes a thank you letter to the business sponsor and to the certified staff sponsor
Business Sponsor
The business sponsor is the person who either individually, or with his agency, organization, or business, agrees to assume responsibility for the student intern's learning experience. The Business Sponsor:
- Agrees to participate in the internship program
- Conducts job interview for potential interns
- Assists the student intern in setting goals
- Insures the student is able to do tasks necessary to reach set goals
- Keeps a record of student intern work hours
- Provides a challenging internship experience. Increases student intern responsibilities when a student demonstrates capacity to assume more responsibility
- Provides intern with a broad view of the entire operation, spectrum of job possibilities, and educational requirements
- Confers with student to provide feedback on strengths and areas in which intern needs to improve
- Completes an evaluation for the student intern
- Evaluates the internship program and provides suggestions for improvement
Certified Staff Sponsor (Mentor Teacher)
The Certified Staff Sponsor (Mentor Teacher) is a certified member of the staff (teacher, counselor, administrator, media specialist, etc.) at the student's school. This is typically a teacher who teachers in an area related to the work of the internship. The Certified Staff Sponsor:
- Helps the student intern set worthwhile objectives for the internship and determines requirements for evaluation
- Meets regularly with student intern to discuss progress, review journal, and offers advice on the project
- Evaluates the intern's journal, project, and work experience
- Assigns a final grade and gives it to the Career Development Coordinator
Career Development Coordinator
The Career Development Coordinator:
- Advertises/markets the internship program
- Explains program requirements to potential student interns
- Reviews applications for alignment with career plans
- Helps students and business sponsors complete forms
- Assists the student in securing a certified staff sponsor
- Assists the student in connecting to an appropriate business
- Provides assistance to the student, the certified staff sponsor, and the business sponsor during the internship
- Receives the final grade from the certified staff sponsor and submits the grade for credit
