New High School Course of Study
www.ncpublicschools.org/newsroom/news/2006-07/20061208-01Chris' thoughts -
"New High School Course of Study" is a fancy way to say that the high school graduation requirements have changed, and some students will have to work harder to graduate.
I keep hearing wild rumors about the new Standard Course of Study, so I decided to investigate.
Rather than doing away with two of the current four courses of study, the new "proposal" is actually more of a combination of the Career Prep, College Tech Prep and College/University Prep courses of study.
The "proposal" includes the following key line:
- "... an endorsement of at least four units in one of the following areas: Career-Technical Education, Arts Education, JROTC, Advanced Placement/IB, Second Language or other."
This is similar to what we already have in the Career Prep and College Tech Prep courses of study. This should dispel the rumor that students would not want to sign up for CTE and Arts courses. Under the new "proposal," CTE and Arts courses would still be required for many students, possibly even more than under the current system.
It is still unclear whether our existing career pathways will still be in existence, but It will still be critical in the middle grades to guide the students to a career pathway, so they can make an informed choice for their high school "endorsement" area.
The State Board of Education will be holding town meetings across the state for the next few months before making a final decision.
