Chris' thoughts -
The other four-year degree!
Parents are so concerned with getting their student into a four-year program that they miss the whole point about education. The four-year degree is not a magical piece of paper that will protect you the rest of your life. In fact most employers do not care if you have one, and many would prefer that you do not. Education is supposed to prepare you for a specific career. Too many people are getting the four-year degree with no sense as to the job they might get, and then wonder why there is no job waiting for them when they graduate.
An apprenticeship in the construction industry could lead to a very rewarding career. Many construction jobs are in high demand, the pay is good, the work can be a lot of fun, and most employers will pay for your postsecondary (college) education.
As an apprentice you get to see a lot of aspects of the construction industry that you might not otherwise see. You may decide that you want to go back to school to become an engineer, architect, or any other job. You will have gained valuable hands-on experiences that others in your new profession may not have experienced, and your employer may foot the bill to get you educated if they can keep you on in the new position.
