Description
Timber Drive Elementary School has operated as a year-round school in Garner, North Carolina since opening in July 1997. Currently, we operate as a single track 4 school.
At Timber Drive, we focus on learning today to develop tomorrow’s future leaders.
Our vision:
At Timber Drive, our vision is to provide a cooperative community effort to encourage the maximum achievement of each student. Through Professional Learning Communities, teachers collaboratively set goals, plan challenging and relevant instructional activities, assess individual student learning, and evaluate the results. By providing a safe and secure learning environment, students and staff are encouraged to be risk takers and are celebrated for their work. At Timber Drive everyone is appreciated and respected. Diversity among students and staff is valued. The education of students is the shared responsibility of the staff, parents, and community members. Together, we will provide our students the tools to become successful, lifelong learners, preparing them for bright futures in a global society.
Curriculum: Global Schools Collaborative Network
To be globally competitive, students must understand that activities or decisions made in one part of the world can affect the environments, economies, and people in other parts of the world. This understanding is central to global studies.
The WCPSS Global Schools Network will be a group of 17 schools dedicated to challenging students to become globally aware citizens. Study of the world's cultures, religions, literature, history and language will prepare students to confront global issues.
The schools in this network teach international content across the curriculum and at all levels to expand students' knowledge of other countries and cultures. Through a partnership with VIF International Education, a teacher exchange program will recruit visiting teachers from places as far as South Africa, Spain and China to teach your child.
Each school will provide:
- Foreign language instruction
- Integrated global lessons
- Visiting Foreign Exchange Faculty
- iPad carts (30 iPads) for each grade level
One middle and one high school will be added to this network in May 2011.

Academic Highlights
Literacy Blocks follow the Daily 5 Framework including building fluency, stamina, comprehension, and independence with reading through Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Teachers provided daily differentiated Guided Reading Instruction. Timber Drive is an mClass Reading Diagnostic School. Utilzing this tool, we assess our students’ progress in reading quarterly. Interventions and progress monitoring are provided daily based on individual student needs. Math Instruction emphasizes rigor and higher order thinking through the use of Math Expressions Resources, Math Talk, Student Leaders, and other researched based activities. Manipulatives and technology are utitilzed to develop deep conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. Daily Instruction includes problem solving and collaborative learning. Students attend specials on a daily rotating schedule. Specialists collaborate with each other and classroom teachers to build connections between grade level objectives and the specials: physical education, art, music, media, guidance and Spanish. Specialists embrace global connections and promote cultural awareness through their collaborative projects including Read Around the World activities and Cultural Arts Nights.
