Description
At Fred A. Smith Elementary School we not only firmly believe that every child can learn and be successful in school, but we put this belief into practice by providing multiple opportunities for each child to demonstrate their growth and ensure adequate yearly progress. Lessons are designed to address different learning styles by using a variety of materials and presentation methods. Children are routinely given the opportunity to learn through hands on materials, visual aids, projects, large and small group work, individual conferencing, field trips, technology use and by incorporating physical education and the creative arts.
Smith Elementary is a Project Achieve School. This is a Wake County sponsored program that provides each teacher in grade 3-5 with daily focus lessons in language arts and math. These focus lessons are usually about 15 minutes in length and serve as an anticipatory set into the longer lesson. All the focus lessons are directly correlated to the curriculum objectives. The children are given assessments in both math and language arts about every week. The teachers use these assessment results to guide their lesson planning as well as to provide weekly remediation and enrichment to the students.
Smith Elementary School is very proud to be recognized as a North Carolina School of Distinction for the second consecutive year. We also take great pride in the fact that we have achieved high student growth as well as made adequate yearly progress, as measured by the new No Child Left Behind federal legislation. The students at Smith continue to soar to success!
