Dual enrollment for high school students provides for academic enrichment in accredited institutions of higher education, community colleges, and non-WCPSS secondary schools accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dual Enrollment at Institutions of Higher Education

Course Eligibility

Courses must be approved within the institution of higher education (IHE).

Courses may be online or traditional.

The course must not be available to the student at the student's school.

The course must be part of the student's comprehensive course of study.

Student Eligibility

The principal must certify that the student is enrolled in high school courses for at least half of the school day, is making appropriate progress toward graduation, and has taken all other appropriate, available courses at the school.

Each student must complete a Wake County Public School System Dual Enrollment Form prior to taking any course.

The Dual Enrollment Form must be signed by the principal, the parent, and the student prior to enrollment. The principal's signature indicates approval for the student to take the course and to receive credit and a grade as indicated on the Dual Enrollment Form.

General Policies

High school students taking IHE courses through dual enrollment shall be responsible for any and all required tuition, fees, books, or materials.

High school students dually enrolled will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the IHE.

High school graduation credits and grades will be awarded upon a student's presenting evidence from the IHE of successful completion of the course. Quality points will be calculated on the AP scale as defined in the WCPSS High School Program Planning Guide.

The dual enrollment of students during the summer is permitted.

At the end of each IHE quarter, semester, or summer school session, the student will be responsible for requesting that the IHE mail an official transcript directly to the base school of the dually-enrolled student as evidence of course completion.

A dually-enrolled student taking a three to five (3-5) hour semester course or a quarter hour equivalent and successfully completing the course requirements will receive one credit at the base school.

The principal may grant permission for a dually-enrolled student to attend classes at the IHE during the regular school day.  Courses taken for “no credit” may not be taken during the regular school day.

Grades for courses taken under dual enrollment will be used to calculate the Grade Point Average (GPA) of the high school student.

Students enrolled at an IHE shall be subject to all of the established rules, regulations, and calendar of that institution.

Students must take IHE courses for graded credit to earn a high school credit.

The base school will record the credit and grade on the student's official high school transcript.
