The mission of the WCPSS is to educate each student to be a responsible and productive citizen who can effectively manage future challenges. Alignment of the written, taught, and tested curriculum ensures that each student graduates on time prepared for life in the 21st Century.

 

5100.1 Planned and Written Curriculum

A.      A curriculum management plan will include procedures and expectations for the design of the curriculum.

B.      The curriculum management plan will indicate a logical progression of learning goals and objectives from grade level to grade level or from course to course to provide connectivity of learning.

C.      All courses offered will be supported by a written curriculum.

D.      All curriculum guides will have a consistent format and will include strategies for integrating technology into the design of the curriculum.

E.      A focused professional development plan will prepare teachers to teach the adopted curriculum.

F.      Programs adopted by the Instructional Services Division will be aligned with the learning objectives of the intended curriculum.

 

5100.2 The Taught Curriculum

A.      A curriculum management plan will include procedures and expectations for the delivery of the curriculum.

B.      All teachers will teach the written curriculum.

C.      Curriculum guides will include strategies for integrating technology into the delivery of the curriculum.

D.      A focused professional development plan for teachers and administrators shall include opportunities for research-based instructional strategies to meet the needs of each student.

 

5100.3 Evaluated Curriculum

A.      District-level staff will conduct periodic review of the curriculum.

B.      The Instructional Services Division will report to the Board of Education on the effectiveness of the curriculum being delivered, with recommendations for strengthening the instructional program as appropriate.

 

5100.4 Assessed Curriculum

 A.     Teachers will conduct frequent analysis of student learning on the curriculum    objectives through formative and summative assessments. Analysis of assessment outcomes should be used to inform instruction.

B.      District staff will monitor all courses taught within the WCPSS to ensure that the written curriculum is the taught and assessed curriculum. The delivery of the written curriculum and student learning will be assessed with district summative assessments.

 

 

5100.5 Role Responsibilities

A. The Board shall:

1.       Approve the curriculum scopes and sequences;

2.       Provide funding for staff development opportunities which focus on curriculum design for increased student achievement;

3.       Communicate to its constituents the board’s curricular expectations; and

4.       Fund, within the budget process, adequate resources needed to implement the curriculum based on data.

B. The Superintendent shall:

1.       Implement the policy;

2.       Annually report to the board concerning implementation; and

3.       Ensure that a functional decision-making structure is in place to carry out this 

policy.

C. The Chief Academic Officer shall:

1.       Ensure that a master long-range plan is in place for District curriculum development, revisions, program assessment, and student assessment;

2.       Implement the master long-range plan, providing technical and expert assistance as required; and

3.       Assist principals in the monitoring of the implementation of the curriculum.

D.  The Area Superintendents shall:

       1.      Ensure that schools in their area conduct annual analysis of student achievement in each curricular area as part of the School Improvement Plan process.

E. The Principal shall:

1.       Be responsible for the implementation of the curriculum;

2.       Communicate to stakeholders the importance of effective curriculum and instructional practices on a regular basis;

3.       Observe classes, monitor lessons and assessments;

4.       Initiate reflective dialogue with teaching staff to improve instruction; and

5.       Use, as a minimum, the following basic strategies to monitor curriculum:

a.       45-minute observations,

b.       Frequent walk-through observations,

c.       Conduct or review minutes of curriculum planning meetings, and

d.       Periodic review of curriculum documents.

F. Teachers shall:

1.       Teach the district curriculum;

2.       Frequently assess and document student mastery of curriculum objectives and modify instruction to ensure students’ success;

3.       Participate in curriculum development/revision activities; and

4.       Participate in professional development.
