Teacher assistants shall be assigned for the purpose of freeing teachers from performing routine duties in order to permit teachers to concentrate on instruction and related matters. Teacher assistants may be assigned specific duties for the purpose of providing services to meet the unique needs of identified students with disabilities.

Assistants shall perform all duties under the supervision of teachers and principals.

When deemed appropriate, a principal may assign a regular classroom teacher assistant to act as a substitute teacher. If a teacher assistant acts as a substitute teacher, he/she will be paid for that service at the same daily rate as the daily salary of an entry-level teacher with a class “A” North Carolina teaching license, as specified in Board Policy 3800/4800, Section 11.1.2.

Special programs teacher assistants may be assigned as substitute teachers in accordance with the provisions of Board Policy 3800/4800, Local Supplement Section 11.1.2
