1005                                   RESPONSIBILITIES OF A BOARD MEMBER                            1005

 

A Board member shall endeavor to attend all meetings, discuss items presented on the agenda, and vote upon motions and resolutions presented.  It is important that a Board member is nonpartisan in dealing with school matters and that he/she not subordinate the education of children and youth to any partisan principle, group, interest, or personal ambition.

A Board member should:           

            1.  Have personal integrity and an appreciation of the values of good education,

            2.  Be a successful citizen, willing to, and capable of assuming responsibility,

            3.  Work effectively with others,

4.  Have courage of his/her convictions, always voting his/her beliefs,

5.  Be a champion of the public schools,

            6. Be prepared and willing to devote sufficient time to the study of the problems of education in the system as a whole, as well as the state and nation at-large, so as to interpret them to the electorate district,

            7.  Be willing to make sacrifices of personal time for the benefit of the district,

8. Attend all regularly scheduled board meetings, insofar as possible, and become informed concerning the issues to be considered at those meetings, and

 

9.  Comply with North Carolina General Statute 115C-50 by earning the required

     twelve (12) hours of training annually. (Refer to Policy 1610-Board Member     

     Opportunities for Development.)

 

10. Comply with G.S. 160A-84 by earning two hours of ethics education within 12 months of election or appointment to the Board.
