October 7, 2003-- Wake County voters approved a $450 million school bond referendum- the maximum amount the County can sell without a tax increase. Called PLAN 2004, the program covers 2004-08 and includes building 13 new schools and a pre-kindergarten center, comprehensive renovations at 16 schools, and repairs and re-roofing projects at 61 campuses for $550 million. The balance would come from savings from construction programs, state school construction funds, interest earnings, and other local funds.
PLAN 2004 is one segment of a continuous capital improvement program to address the demands and responsibilities associated with growth.
Last year, over 104,000 students came to Wake County schools to receive an excellent education. More than 4,000 additional children come to the Wake County Public School System each year for that same opportunity. As WCPSS continues receiving national recognition and the area continues to be recognized as one of the best places to live in the country, more and more people will move here to take advantage of the high-achieving schools and great places to live and work.
This growth is a great testament to the Triangle, but with this growth comes certain demands, such as providing quality facilities and an adequate number of classrooms that support today's curriculum. As long as the county continues to grow, and our existing facilities continue to age, it will be necessary to invest in new school construction and renovation.
