Update for Middle School Parents Who Made Choice Selections Before Feb. 3rd

Please note that this issue only affects those choosing middle schools (rising 6, 7 and 8 graders) who made their selections before Feb. 3.

Summary

Prior to Feb. 3, some parents choosing middle schools with split feeder patterns - middle schools that feed multiple high schools - were unable to select the high school pathway they desired. The middle schools involved are: Carnage, Centennial, East Cary, East Millbrook, East Wake, Heritage, Holly Grove, Lufkin Road, Rolesville, Salem, Wake Forest-Rolesville, Durant Road, Wendell, West Cary, and West Millbrook.

The Choice Selection Application was updated to correct this on Feb. 3. However, as a result of that update, many of those affected by the initial problem had their middle school selections reset, and will need to re-rank or re-confirm their choices before 10 p.m. EST on Friday, Feb. 24.

1,191 students' choice selections were affected. This issue will not affect your chance to be selected for a particular school, so long as you take action by the deadline.

Contacting Parents

Wake Schools sent emails to the affected parents over the weekend of Feb. 4-5. However, not all emails made it through, due to undeliverable email addresses, and some parents did not provide email addresses. Parents are encouraged to review their contact information for accuracy after they have reviewed their choice selections.

The text of the email is below.

Dear WCPSS Parent:

We need to make you aware of a recent software update that affects families of rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are participating in the choice selection process.

For some participants who are requesting a middle school with a “split” feeder pattern – that is, a middle school that feeds students to multiple high schools – the choice selection software has not been providing families the ability to select the specific high school pathway for the middle school they were requesting.

As of February 3rd, the choice selection software has now been updated to allow families requesting a seat in a “split” middle school to also select the appropriate high school pathway based on the choices available for their node.

Since you have been identified as one of the choice participants affected by this update, your previous middle school selections will likely have been “reset”, and you need to go back into the choice selection software and re-confirm or re-rank the choices for your student so that you can select the specific high school pathway for your middle school choices. You must do this by February 24th to be sure that your choice requests are processed properly.

Please know that this software update will not affect your chances of being selected for a seat or your priority standing for any of the schools you are requesting in any way. You just need to log back in to the system to re-confirm your choices before 10:00PM EST on Friday, February 24th.

If you have any questions about this process, or if you require assistance in re-confirming or re-ranking the middle school choices for your rising 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student, please contact the WCPSS Office of Student Assignment at studentassignment@wcpss.net or by phone at 919-431-7333.

We apologize for this inconvenience.
