School Construction Report


Goal 2008: WCPSS is committed to academic excellence. By 2008, 95 percent of students in grades 3 through 12 will be at or above grade level as measured by the State of North Carolina End-of-Grade or Course tests, and all student groups will demonstrate high growth.

UNDERWOOD ELEMENTARY EARNS SIR WALTER RALEIGH AWARD
At its March 15 meeting, Jyoti Sharma of WCPSS Facilities told the Board of Education about recognition earned by the renovation of Underwood Elementary School. The Raleigh City Council awarded Underwood additions and renovations project a Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance. The award recognizes an institutional project that exhibits a new standard for excellence and an example of the future, an awareness of the importance of good community appearance and stewardship of the land, and improvements upon an existing site or structure and preservation of important historic and cultural features. Board chair Susan Parry joined Sharma and facility planner Larry Sherrill in presenting the award to Underwood principal Mary Ann Kearney.

BOARD APPROVES ENLOE HIGH ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single prime contract to DeVere Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $27,813,000 for Enloe High School additions and renovations. This project includes construction of classrooms, special programs, career and technical education, staff and plant operations areas; major renovations to health, PE and athletic areas; conversion of existing spaces into a training center; and site upgrades. A proposed new gym was not included at this time. This project will be funded through the PLAN 2000 School Building Program and the PLAN 2004 School Building Program.

BOARD APPROVES MARTIN MIDDLE ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single prime contract to DeVere Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $19,017,000 for Martin Middle School additions and renovations. This project includes demolition of the old 2-story classroom building and construction of a 3-story classroom building; renovations to the 1994 classroom/administration building to create additional classrooms; renovation of the auditorium, construction of new performing arts classrooms, addition of a new bus loop, and building soccer and softball fields and track. A proposed new gym, dining and classroom building was not included at this time. This project will be funded through the PLAN 2004 School Building Program.

BOARD APPROVES DANIELS MIDDLE ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a general contract to J.M. Thompson Company in the amount of $6,648,000; awarded the plumbing contract to Southern Piping Company in the amount of $985,000; awarded the mechanical contract to Climate Control, Inc. in the amount of $3,874,000; and awarded the electrical contract to Vaughan Electric Company, Inc in the amount of $2,376,537 for Daniel Middle School additions and renovations. This project will construct a connector building to tie campus together with the new lobby, Administration, Student Support Services and teachers' lounge; construct new band area; renovate classrooms, auditorium, music, PE and support areas; provide new lockers; irrigate competition field; address outstanding maintenance and modernization needs. This project will be funded through the PLAN 2004 School Building Program.

BOARD APPROVES PURCHASE OF NEW MODULAR CLASSROOM UNITS
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded contracts for the purchase of modular classroom units to Resun Leasing, Inc. in the amount of $1,259,654. This will provide three additional six classroom units and one additional eight classroom unit, which will be located at the Willow Springs Elementary, Holly Springs Elementary, York Elementary and Middle Creek Elementary school sites. This project is funded by the PLAN 2004 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project.

BOARD APPROVES CONTRACT FOR SITE SET-UP OF MOBILE CLASSROOM UNITS
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded contracts for $575,000 for the site set-up of 25 additional mobile classroom units. This project is funded by the PLAN 2004 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project.

BOARD APPROVES SITE SET-UP OF MODULAR UNIT AT LONGVIEW
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract to Beau Chene Company, LLC in the amount of $170,900 for the site set up of an eight classroom modular unit to be located at Longview for swing space use. This project is funded by the PLAN 2000 School Building Program.

BOARD APPROVES WAKE FOREST/ROLESVILLE MIDDLE ROOF REPLACEMENT
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract to Curtis Construction Company, Inc. in the amount of $743,744 for the roof replacement at Wake Forest/Rolesville Middle School. This project is funded by the PLAN 2004 School Building Program.

BOARD APPROVES NEW MODULAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON DUBOIS SITE
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a single-prime contract to Beau Chene Company, LLC in the amount of $1,414,000 for the site setup (assembly, installation and site work) of the modular elementary school to be located on the Dubois site in Wake Forest. This project is funded through the PLAN 2000 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project and PLAN 2004 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project.

BOARD APPROVES SITE SET-UP OF MODULAR UNITS AT LOCKHART AND WILLOW SPRINGS
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education awarded the single-prime contract to Beau Chene Company, LLC in the amount of $254,000 for the site setup of the six classroom modular units to be located at Lockhart Elementary and Willow Springs Elementary Schools. This project is funded through the PLAN 2000 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project and PLAN 2004 Mobile Classrooms - Growth project.

BOARD APPROVES CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS FOR HEDINGHAM MIDDLE
At its March 15 meeting, the Board of Education approved the construction documents for Hedingham Middle School. This project will be funded through the PLAN 2000 School Building Program.
