Green Hope Art in Motion
Green Hope High School will be hosting “Art in Motion – Percussion and Winter Guard Competition” on Feb. 21. Several Wake County high schools including Athens Drive, Broughton, Cary, Green Hope, Panther Creek, Sanderson and Wakefield will be participating in the event. Art in Motion is a major fundraiser that benefits all band groups including marching band, concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz band, drum line and guard.
The event starts at noon and admission is only $8 for adults and $3 for children under 10. Come enjoy the music, spirit and fun and support your favorite school team. Southeast Raleigh High Students in All-State Choir
Several Southeast Raleigh High School students have been chosen to perform in the North Carolina All-State Choir. These students include: Kayla Bitonio, Dan Smith, Dulce Perez, Jamica Moore, Alexis Wooten, Sam Sutton and Isaih Stevens. More than 1,000 students across North Carolina auditioned to join the All-State Choir.
The choir will perform in Greensboro on Feb. 23 and 24.
Olive Chapel Elementary to Host Family Wellness Fair
On Feb. 12 from 6-8 p.m. Olive Chapel Elementary will host its Second Annual Family Wellness Fair. Last year was a great success with over 200 families in attendance. Attendees will enjoy a free chair massage, door prizes, health club/store coupons, samples and health and wellness information. Vendors will share their services to help the school create a happy, healthy community.
Garner Students Perform at Governor’s Inauguration
The Garner Magnet High School choral group “Die Meistersingers” was chosen to perform for the swearing-in ceremonies of Gov. Beverly Perdue. The group is made up of 39 juniors and seniors. The group, conducted by senior Julie Dale, sang 10 songs, including the National Anthemand My Country Tis of Thee.
Wakelon Elementary Student Wins Art Contest
Wakelon Elementary fourth-grade student Muhammed Ibrahim recently won an art contest sponsored by the National Korean American Education and Service Consortium.
Of the 400 artists that entered from across the country, four were chosen for an expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.
Muhammed’s art was exhibited Jan. 23 in the office building of the U.S. House of Representatives and Jan. 26-28 in Union Station. The theme for this contest was “America’s Future Starts with Healthy Children.”
Millbrook High Students Win Marketing Competition
Congratulations to five Millbrook High School students who took first place at the 2009 District Marketing Competitive Events Conference. This statewide competition is for students interested in management and marketing.
The first place winners include:

Jeffrey Mamuscia – Sports and Entertainment Marketing.
Jarrick Brown and Serena Bogaczyk – Sports and Entertainment Marketing Management Team Decision Making.
Sanderson High Teacher Recognized
Sanderson High School Career and Technical Education teacher William Mefford has been awarded the NCSU Inspirational Teacher Award. Incoming freshman at NC State nominate high school teachers for this award. A panel of NC State faculty reviews the nominations and chooses the winners.
The purpose of this award is to recognize teachers that have a profound influence on their students and to recognize the role that high school teachers play in motivating their students to achieve.
Broughton High Students Honored
Broughton High School junior Alex Chin has been awarded the Hanna Ridgeway prize for placing first in the North Carolina United Nations Association essay contest. Alex, who wrote about environmental sustainability in the 21st century, competed against students from across North Carolina.
Brianna Thornhill, a junior at Broughton, has been accepted to participate in the Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program sponsored by the UNC School of Medicine. Breanna will spend nine weeks participating in lectures, labs, and tests on medical issues impacting the minority community. She will also participate in career planning options and college preparatory sessions.
Middle Creek Student Recognized for Volunteer Efforts
Middle Creek High School 10th-grader Jim Turner has been recognized by the North Carolina Children’s Hospital for raising more than $1400. Jim makes origami cards that are sold in gift shops and bookstores. All proceeds from the cards are donated to the Children’s Hospital. Jim has won awards at the state and national level for his origami creations.
Centennial Campus Middle Focuses on Leadership and Learning
Centennial Campus Magnet Middle School recently spent a week celebrating “Linking Leadership to Learning” in conjunction with the beginning of the second semester.
The week began with keynote speaker Nancy Hunter Denney of Potential Leadership Training and ended with speaker Marlon Smith of Success by Choice. During the week, classroom speakers, school-wide projects, and contests highlighted the theme of leadership and learning.
Wake County Students Honored During Art Competition
Twenty-seven Wake County high school students were honored at Barton College for their winning entries in the National Scholastic Art Awards competition.
The Gold Key Award winners were:

Jennifer Harley, Kathleen Petermman, Margrethe Williams, Christina Yokeley, Amanda Hawkins and Sarah Parker – Enloe,
Daniel Lipford and Deirdre O’Conner – Green Hope,
and Jim Martin – Panther Creek who won 3 Gold Key Awards.
The Silver Key winners were:
Rachel Seay, Justin Forestieri and Lauren Byrne of Athens Drive,
Linda Franken, Ian Harward, Kristie Kim, Kathleen Peterman, Shannon MacKenzie and Elizabeth Poston of Enloe,
Katie Creel, Miranda Hailstone and Austin Newell of Knightdale,
Maddie Dolan of Millbrook,
and Anne Kloefkorn, Steven Powell and Rebecca Liu of Panther Creek.
The winners competed against approximately 1,800 entries. The Gold Key recipients will advance to the national competition. The exhibition of student work started on Jan. 25 and ran through Feb. 8 at the Barton College Art Gallery,
Holly Ridge Middle Students Participate in Career Day
Eighth-grade students at Holly Ridge Middle School participated in Career Day on Friday, Jan. 31. Representatives from a number of professions shared their work experiences with the students in an effort to illustrate the many possible job opportunities open to them.
The students were able to listen to presentations by such diverse careers as rocket scientist and secret service agent. Doctors, lawyers and firefighters took time from their schedules to share their backgrounds with the students. Careers in teaching, modeling and engineering were explored.
Cary High Wrestler Ranked Number One
Cary High School senior Eloheim Palmas is currently the number one ranked wrestler in his weight class in the United States. Eloheim is 41-0 this year, winning every bout by a pin or forfeit. His career record is 201-9, and he is 160-1 since 10th grade.
Cary Wrestling Coach has 600th Win
Coach Jerry Winterton recently won his 600th wrestling match as a coach at Cary High School. Only a small group of coaches nationwide have had this accomplishment. These victories include 14 Team State Championships and 10 Individual Team State Championships.
Board Names New Principals
At its Feb. 3 meeting, the Board of Education named principals for a new elementary school opening next year, a middle school and a high school.
The board named James Argent principal of the new Lake Myra Elementary, Craig Harris principal of West Lake Middle and Jamee Lynch principal of East Wake School of Integrated Technology.
Argent has served as principal of Swift Creek Elementary since 2005. Prior to that, he served an assistant principal at Timber Drive Elementary and served as an assistant principal intern and curriculum integration coordinator at Centennial Campus Middle School. He was a teacher in the Burke County, NC and Catawba County, NC schools. He was a finalist for WCPSS Assistant Principal of the Year in 2004.
Harris has served as principal of a Wilson County, NC middle school since 2005. Prior to that, he served as an assistant principal and teacher in Wilson County, NC schools. He was the Wilson County Principal of the Year in 2008.
Lynch has served as principal of Sanford Creek Elementary since it opened in 2007. Prior to that, she served as principal of Hodge Road Elementary. She was an assistant principal at Vance Elementary and a teacher at Garner High. She was an assistant principal in the Johnston County, NC schools and an administrator at Methodist College in Fayetteville, NC. She was the WCPSS Principal of the Year in 2006.
The board named retired teacher Ann Deegan as interim principal at West Lake Middle School. Deegan has served as an interim principal at Washington Elementary, Lufkin Road Middle and Dillard Drive Elementary. She was principal of Martin Middle School and Underwood Elementary, as well as a WCPSS administrator.
