Nick Miller receives award from Raleigh-Wake 911 Emergency Center.

Emergency Call Center Staff Honors Lufkin Road Student

On Aug 4, Barry Furey, Director of the 911 Center, came to Lufkin Road Middle School to present a "Great Job" Award to Nicholas Miller. Nicholas, a sixth-grade student, has twice called 911 in order to enlist emergency medical assistance for his mother. Furey praised Nick for his good judgment and level headedness, saying he was very helpful to the dispatchers. At the presentation at Lufkin, Nick got to meet those dispatchers, Chris Mise and Stephanie Barnard.

NC Watermelons Served in WCPSS Lunchrooms

A NC Department of Agriculture program cuts through red tape and helps deliver NC farm produce into Wake County Public School System lunchrooms.
Marilyn Moody of WCPSS Child Nutrition Services says the state delivered freshly picked NC watermelon to WCPSS during the week of August 6.Students were able to  eat watermelon in schools all week.

Heritage Middle Students Collect Backpacks for Refugees

Members of a community service club, Roots and Shoots, at Heritage Middle School are collecting backpacks and schools supplies for children of families who have moved to the Triangle as a result of unlivable conditions in their native countries.

According to the United States Committee for Refugees and Immigrants in Raleigh, approximately 400 refugees have settled in Wake County since 2007. The backpacks will be donated to refugees arriving in the next few months as well as those who arrived within the last year. The students hope to donate more than 50 backpacks. The drive ends Aug. 14.

Fuquay-Varina Band Director Joins American School Band Directors Association

Fuquay-Varina High School Band Director, Matthew Edwards, was elected to membership in the American School Band Directors Association at their national conference in Nashville, Tenn. Directors are chosen for membership based on teaching experience, the success of their music program, and recommendation of members from this prestigious organization. The association consists of about 1,000 band directors from across the United States. The mission of the association is to advance and improve music education of those students engaged in the study of band instruments.

Broughton Students Cover Presidential Visit

A group of student journalist at Broughton High School had the opportunity to cover President Obama’s visit on July 27. Three students from WCAP, Broughton High School 's student-run video production facility, taped the event and were among professional journalist in the designated press area. Although, broadcasting had ended over the summer, the students jumped at this once in a lifetime opportunity. The footage that was captured during the President’s Town Hall meeting has been placed on the WCAP website and will also be used for news reports during the upcoming school year.

Board Names New Principal

At its August 4 meeting, the Board of Education named Camille Hedrick principal of Apex Middle School.
Dr. Hedrick has served as assistant principal of Lufkin Road Middle since 2006. Prior to that, she was a teacher at Lufkin Road Middle. Before coming to WCPSS, Hedrick was a teacher in Virginia public schools. She earned her doctorate in education leadership from George Mason University.

School Board Selects Sutton to Represent District 4

The Board of Education has selected Keith Sutton to represent District 4 on the school board through November 2011 following the resignation of former chair Rosa Gill.

Sutton, 39, is the legislative affairs program manager for the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. He is a past president and chief executive officer of the Triangle Urban League. In his application letter, Sutton wrote, "Since 1995, I have worked in the areas of race, government and community relations, as well as served as a nonprofit executive, and community and political organizer." Sutton served on the Healthy Schools Task Force, the board of directors of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the Blue Ribbon Committee on the Future of Wake County, and the Southeast Raleigh Assembly.
Sutton has two daughters, one of whom is entering the first grade at Conn Elementary School.
