Ellen Bergman from Fox Road Elementary has been named the Wake County Public School System Teacher Assistant of the Year.

Wake County Public School System has two drivers (Jonathan Serxner and Ollie Williams, Jr.) who faced stiff competition from over 750 WCPSS school bus drivers, then moved on to compete against the best drivers at the state's Eastern District Roadeo in Farmville, NC on April 22. Jonathan Serxner with fourteen years of bus driving experience and Ollie Williams, Jr., a third year driver, finished in the top ten of the Eastern District Roadeo qualifying them to represent WCPSS in the State School Bus Roadeo. For both Serxner and Williams, this is the first year either of them has entered the competition. Ironically, both drivers work out of the same Broughton Transportation Office.

Cary High School wrestling coach Jerry Winterton has been named to the Class of 2004 National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Winterton was honored May 16th at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill for this prestigious honor. The purpose of this banquet is to honor and recognize people for their years of commitment as positive role models to our student athletes. Michael Clair of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, will present the awards. There will be permanent recognition at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum, in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Coach Winterton's regular season record since beginning the program in 1981 is 331 wins and 3 losses. His teams have won ten wrestling state championships while at Cary HS. His 2003-2004 team finished 2nd in the state in the dual and individual championships.

2003-2004

Charlotte Howard of Lufkin Road Middle and Joy Wellons won awards at the state Food Service Association's annual conference over the summer. They earned first place in the State Culinary Arts Show. Wellons also won the Eaton 'best of show' Award. Wellons won for a lemon pepper chicken meal and Howard for a hamburger plate. The competition included 528 entries from across the state in categories such as meat and vegetable palte, sandwich plate, desserts, breakfast, salad plates and bread.

2002-2003

Two Wake County bus drivers were honored at the state roadeo competition held at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. Billy McKemey of Fuquay finished second and Byron Lanier of Broughton finished sixth. Competition was keen and everyone said they thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality and professionalism. Margaret McLean and Bridgett Croom from East Wake placed third in the State Special Needs Roadeo. Wake Transportation Director Vern Hatley said "Being rated the third best special needs team in the state is a testament of the training, hard work, and compassion of these two excellent employees."

2002-2003

Three Wake County school bus drivers placed in the top 10 at the regional roadeo held in Farmville and will represent Wake County at the state competition on May 7. Billy McKemey of Fuquay earned 1st place. Paul Gale of Sanderson won 6th place. Byron Lanier of Broughton won 9th place. The state bus roadeo will be held at the State Fairgrounds on May 7.

2002-2003

Millbrook bus drivers earned first place at the 2003 Wake County Public School System Roadeo. Drivers from Green Hope finished second and Wake Forest third. Drivers from East Wake won first place in the Special Needs Roadeo Competition. In the individual competitions, Pam Tingen of Green Hope won first place. The top ten drivers included 2nd place, Jeff Mellen of Fuquay; 3rd place, Byron Lanier of Broughton; 4th place, Karen Daily of Millbrook; 5th place, Paul Gale of Sanderson; 6th place, Matthew Monk of Apex; 7th place, Jo Jones of Apex; 8th place, Sharon Webster of Leesville; 9th place, Carolyn Ryals of Green Hope; and 10th place, Iris Mosley of Millbrook. The top eight individual winners will represent Wake County at the Regional Roadeo in Farmville, on April 30. The top 10 regional winners compete in the State Roadeo May 7 at the State Fairgrounds.

Angela Malloy-Sanders was named Wake County Employee of the Month before the Board of Education Nov. 18.

Eleanor Martin of Dillard Drive Elementary was named Wake County Teacher Assistant of the Year for 2002.

2001-2002

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects presented an award to CLH Design, PA in recognition of outstanding professional achievement in the site development and landscape design at Yates Mill Elementary. Project consultant was Christine Hilt. The architect was Pearce Brinkley, Cease and Lee. The school system staff included Gerald Core, project manager, and Sheri Green, facility planner.

2001-2002

The American Council of Engineering Companies of NC presented an honors award to Law Engineering and Environmental Services, Inc in recognition of engineering excellence in the roof replacement and implementation at Carroll Middle. Principal scientist was Lane Gallo. Project Manager was Kelly Wilcox. The school system staff included Greg Clark, project manager. Carroll Middle Assistant Principal Tom Filer was honored for his coordination of school staff, students and contractors during the project.

2001-2002

Mazie Swindell Smith, director of WCPSS Organizational Development, successfully completed the requirements for the Energy Management Diploma Program. By earning her diploma, Smith was required to attend three intensive week-long sessions that are designed to cover all issues that an energy manager may encounter in her career.

2000-2001

School bus drivers Cedric Harrell and Erskine Bullock received the Tracy Lea Calhoun Memorial Award during the Wake County Public Schools' annual Bus Drivers Awards Banquet held May 16.

Custodian Harold Antoine of Carver Elementary School was selected as this year's recipient of the Charles Mann Award. Each year the custodial department issues an award named for Charles Mann to an employee who meets the high standards set by Mann.
