WCPSS Middle Schools Name Winners in Geography Bee

Feb. 1, 2005 - Seventeen Wake County middle schools participated in the Geography Bee this year naming school winners who will go in to compete at the National Geographic Society's state competition April 1.

This year's WCPSS school winners included sixth graders Brennan Cumaland of Dillard Drive Middle and Ben Mueller of Ligon Middle; seventh graders Stephen Zevgolis of Centennial Campus Middle, Carlos Santos of Heritage Middle, Karthik Subbu of Lufkin Road Middle, Emily Bruner of Martin Middle, Zachary Moore of Salem Middle and Michelle Ginsburg of West Millbrook Middle. Eighth graders included Tom Periera of Apex Middle, Darin Gilreath of Carroll Middle, Omar Hamad of Daniels Middle, Colin Bradley of Davis Drive Middle, Taylor Gartland of Holly Ridge Middle, Ed Waltersdorf of Reedy Creek Middle, Caitlyn Hooks of Wake Forest Rolesville Middle, Hayden Zurl of Wakefield Middle and Andrew Orton of West Cary Middle.

Sixth graders won at two schools. Seventh graders won at six schools. Eighth graders won at nine schools.

Thousands of U.S. schools participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.

The National Geographic Bee will be held May 24-25 in Washington, D.C.
