2007-08 WCPSS Spring Athletic Accomplishments
June 11, 2008 - WCPSS Athletic Director Bobby Guthrie reports that athletic teams at Wake County Public School System middle and high schools met with great success this spring. Guthrie says the followign teams earned recognitions:Boys’ Tennis
Broughton HS finished in the top 4 in the state.
Green Hope HS and Millbrook HS finished in the top 8 in the state.
Girls’ Soccer
Leesville Road HS won the state championship. Paul Dinkenor is the coach. Leesville finished the year ranked in the top 20 nationally by two different groups (#7 by Student Sports Soccer, #17 by National Soccer Coaches Association).
Broughton HS finished in the top 4 in the state.
Apex HS finished in the top 8 in the state.
Boys’ Track
Southeast Raleigh HS finished 3rd in the state championships after winning the regionals.
Wakefield HS finished 5th in the state championships.
Girls’ Track
Southeast Raleigh HS finished 3rd in the state championships after winning the regionals.
Apex HS (5th) and Millbrook HS (6th) finished in the top 10 in the state.
Boys’ Golf
Green Hope HS finished 3rd in the state championships.
Softball
Middle Creek HS finished in the top 4 in the state.
Apex HS finished in the top 8 in the state.
Baseball
Sanderson HS finished in the top 4 in the state, losing in the semi-finals.
Leesville Road HS finished in the top 8 in the state.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Apex HS won the girls NCHSLA state championship for the 2nd year in a row. Jessica Pinneo is the coach.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Apex HS finished 2nd in the North Carolina Lacrosse Association 4A boys’ state championship.
Other Athletic Accomplishments
WCPSS ended the school year with 6 NCHSAA state championships, 3 NCHSAA runner-ups, and 14 teams finishing 3rd or 4th in NCHSAA state championships. WCPSS also won 1 NCHSLA (lacrosse) state championship, 1 State Gymnastics Championship, and 2 North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association State Championships.
Tony Lewis, Sanderson HS head track and assistant football coach, was honored by the NCHSAA as one of “Eight Coaches Who Make A Difference,” in the state of North Carolina.
Kevin Brandt, Fuquay-Varina HS baseball player, was named 4A Baseball Player of the Year by the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association. He will be attending ECU next year.
Thomas Wilson, Leesville Road HS football/baseball player, was named Male Athlete of the Year by the News and Observer (3.3 GPA, attending Elon).
Paige Duval, Garner HS soccer player, was named Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the News and Observer (4.88 GPA, attending NCSU).
Annie Alvarez and Perry Simmons (Sanderson HS student-athletes), and Hillary Taylor (Millbrook HS student-athlete) were honored by the NCHSAA as “Heart of a Champion” winners, which are sportsmanship recognition awards for 25 athletes across the state of North Carolina.
WCPSS had 149 reported signings of student-athletes to participate in college athletics according to an article in the News and Observer.
Middle School Sportsmanship Awards
Davis Drive, Reedy Creek, Salem, Martin, Daniels, Carnage, Heritage, West Millbrook, East Wake, and Wakefield won the sportsmanship awards for the spring sports season.
