East Millbrook Hosts Winter Festival asking: “To What Extent Is The Ocean a Wall or a Highway?”
January 17, 2007 - Each year, as part of the International Baccalaureate program, the school community at East Millbrook Magnet Middle School embarks on the exploration of one essential question. In years past, students have investigated "What makes up our American Fabric?”, "How Can One Person Make a Difference?” and other challenging questions - the kinds of questions with no one answer, but the kinds that push students to think critically in new ways. This sort of inquiry-based learning unites every discipline in a common pursuit and gives the students a holistic educational experience that is quite exciting to watch unfold. This year East Millbrook is pursuing the question, “To What Extent is the Ocean a Wall or a Highway?” As the state school board is revising its standards to reflect their new mission of preparing students to be globally competitive, our middle school students are looking at the ways we are connected and separated by our oceans. Whether in math or physical education, humanities or music, teachers and students have been pursuing this question from all angles and, at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 26, East Millbrook will come alive with all the fruits of their labor. Visitors will see individual projects, class demonstrations, and performances from each of arts groups, and so much more. It is this kind of inquiry-based learning and integration that led to East Millbrook being named a 2006 National Magnet School of Excellence by the Magnet Schools of America.
Students at East Millbrook have shown impressive growth in North Carolina’s ABC tests through the years associated with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. IB schools adhere to the North Carolina standard course of study while also viewing learning through the lenses of Approaches to Learning, Community, Health & Social Education, Environment, and Homo Faber, or man the creator. This combination provides IB students with a rich, international education that prepares them to think critically and see connections between curriculum and the world around them.
