2005-06 Winter Sports Athletic Accomplishments
March 14, 2006 - Wake County Public School System high schools won six state championships (boys basketball, wrestling individual team, boys swimming, gymnastics, indoor track, cheerleading) and finished as the runner-up in three other state championships (girls basketball, wrestling team, gymnastics). WCPSS also had two different schools win national championships in cheerleading. WCPSS Athletics Director Bobby Guthrie reports WCPSS teams earned the following honors:Girls' Basketball
Apex HS won the Sectionals and Eastern Regional but lost in the state championship
finals finishing 2nd in the state.
Boys' Basketball
Wakefield HS won the Sectionals, Eastern Regional and NCHSAA 4A State Championship

Sanderson HS won their Sectional, but lost in the quarterfinals (top 8 finish
in the state).
Wrestling
Individual Team Championships - Cary HS won the NCHSAA 4A State Championship
after winning the Eastern Regional) - Coach Jerry Winterton - 3rd state
championship in last 4 years and 8th state championship since individual
team championships began 20 years ago
Individual Team Championships - Leesville HS finished 7th overall
Team Championships - Cary HS lost in the finals of the NCHSAA 4A State Championship
after winning the Eastern Regional Championship to finish 2nd in the state.
Girls' Swimming
Enloe HS won the Eastern Regional championship for the 8th straight year
- finished 3rd in the state championships.
Leesville HS finished 2nd in the Eastern Regional and 4th in the state championships.
Athens Drive finished 3rd in the Eastern Regional and 6th in the state championships.
Boys' Swimming
Enloe won the NCHSAA 4A State Championship and Eastern Regional for the
8th straight year. Coach Vickie Peoples
Cary finished 2nd in the Eastern Regional and finished 4th in the state
championships.
Leesville finished 3rd in the Eastern Regional and 10th in the state championships.
Gymnastics
Leesville HS won the State Championship
Other Wake County Schools in State Championship: Enloe (2nd), Southeast
(3rd), Green Hope (4th), and Millbrook (5th).
Indoor Track (Girls)
Southeast Raleigh won the NCHSAA 4A State Championships - Coach Eddie Harden

Cheerleading
Green Hope HS won the North Carolina Cheerleading Coaches Association (NCCCA)
State Championship - Coach Kim Collins

Middle Creek HS won the Cheer Sport National Cheerleading Competition in
Atlanta, Georgia - Coach Sonya Ehinger
Broughton HS won the Champion Cup National Cheerleading Competition in Virginia
Beach - Coach Marge Elvers
Middle School Sportsmanship Awards
Apex, Davis Drive, Holly Ridge, West Cary and Lufkin (Southern Conference),
West Millbrook, Heritage, and Wakefield (Northern Conference) and Ligon,
Carroll, Daniels, and Martin (Central Conference) won the sportsmanship
awards for the Winter Sports Season. Sportsmanship banners will be displayed
at these schools.
Other Awards
Scott Campbell (Girl's Basketball Coach at Apex HS) will be coaching the
North Carolina team in the North Carolina versus South Carolina Basketball
Classic.
