International Studies Schools Association visit WCPSS Schools
Feb. 15, 2006 - Several WCPSS schools are taking part in the 2006 annual conference of the International Studies Schools Association, a national network of K-12 schools dedicated to improving students' understanding of the world.Educators attending the conference in Raleigh visited Enloe High and Wiley Elementary today to observer the international studies programs at the schools.
Enloe offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The school offers eight foreign languages and recently has been concentrating on providing students with more international perspectives and connections to the wider world.
Wiley is a magnet school with an international focus designed to develop an understanding of major technological, communications and cultural systems that influence the global society. Electives at Wiley include arts, technology and five foreign languages.
In the field trips to the WCPSS schools, persons attending the conference met with school staff, learned about special electives and observed classes. It was an opportunity for visitors to look at well-known schools with a strong international studies program.
The conference speakers include Marcus Mabry of Newsweek Magazine; Elizabeth Burmaster, Wisconsin Superintendent of Education; Cathy Seeley, President of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Tony Jackson, director of the Gates Foundation International Studies Secondary School Network; Gillian Sorenson of the United Nations Foundation; and Fran Hoch of NC Department of Public Instruction.
Educators from schools and universities across the country are making presentations during the two-day conference, which is headquartered at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in RTP.
Schools that are part of the association are structured in a wide variety of ways, and their curriculum and programs reflect the rich diversity of American primary and secondary education. The association's members include urban magnet schools, charter schools, rural schools, parochial schools, and independent schools.
