Carnage Carries Regional History Competition
March 24, 2006 - Sixty-three Carnage Middle School students traveled to Elon University on March 17 to compete in the regional contest for National History Day. Of these 63 students, 44 advanced to the state competition that will be held on Saturday, April 29 at the Museum of History.
This year's theme is Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events. Students researched topics including the 30-year Mystery: Deep Throat, Music in the Civil War, Hezbollah terrorists, the KKK, women spies in the Civil War, and the Greensboro sit-ins. Utilizing primary resources were instrumental in understanding the topic and supporting their responses during the judging. Three students were able to talk with Joan Felt, Mark W. Felt's (Deep Throat) daughter. This was her first interview since the summer. Members of this group also spoke with Bob Woodward, the Washington Post journalist who reported the Watergate break-in, the resulting convictions of Nixon administration officials and the resignation of President Nixon. Two students also talked with Dr. Matthew Breen, a NCSU scientist who is researching a cure for cancer in dogs that should lead to the cure of cancer in humans. Students have learned the importance of researching, time management, and goal setting.
National History Day is a program designed to promote interest in history among students and to assist teachers in teaching history more creatively and effectively. The program helps students develop skills in historical research, analysis, critical thinking, organization, and presentation, as we improve reading and writing skills. Students use these skills to design individual or group exhibits, write a paper, produce a documentary, create individual or group performances, or develop a web site centered around the annual theme.
At local, district, state, and national history competitions, judges review the students' work and provide constructive comments. In North Carolina, the state contest is administered by the Office of Archives and History with substantial assistance from the Federation of North Carolina Historical Societies.
