School Award For Second Time

Davis Drive staff received a plaque and a flag signifying their No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School status during a National Recognition Ceremony held Nov. 10-11 in Washington, D.C. Davis Drive staff selected Marian Larrea, ESL teacher, and Kathy Knezevic, assistant principal, to attend the ceremonies. Davis Drive principal Pat Andrews said the efforts of these two women enabled many students to experience academic success through the ESL program and a volunteer tutoring program that was instituted by Mrs. Knezevic.
"These schools show what wonderful accomplishments can be made when we focus on the bottom line in education - student achievement," said Spellings. "They are outstanding examples of how all students can achieve to higher standards," she said.
Spellings added that all of these schools have students from all subgroups who've made impressive test gains or who scored in the top tier on state tests.
For the past 24 years, the U.S. Department of Education has recognized many of the nation's most successful schools through its Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Schools selected for this prestigious award model excellence in leadership, teaching, curriculum, student achievement and parental involvement. On July 28, 2002, Department officials announced that schools singled out for national honors must also reflect the goals of the nation's new education reforms for high standards and accountability found under No Child Left Behind.
This is the second time that Davis Drive Elementary has earned the Blue Ribbon Recognition. The US Department of Education recognized Davis Drive as a Blue Ribbon School in 2001.
Other WCPSS schools that earned recognition by the US Department of Education as Blue Ribbon Schools include Enloe High in 1982-83, Broughton High in 1983-84, Powell Elementary in 1991-92, Brentwood Elementary and Carver Elementary in 1996-97, Combs Elementary in 1998-99, Davis Drive Elementary and Wiley Elementary in 2000-01, Cary High in 2001-02 and Morrisville Elementary in 2005-06.
