Elected Official go to Wake County Schools
Feb. 16, 2005 - Elected Officials are going to school in Wake County. During the week of Feb. 22-25, more than 65 elected officials and other VIPs will visit Wake County schools to see first hand what happens inside the walls of education. The school guests will visit classrooms and meet with students and teachers, as well as take a tour of the facilities. Schools will show off their strengths and accomplishments while at the same time clearly communicating the challenges they face on a daily basis. The Wake County PTA Council, the Wake County Division of Principals and Assistant Principals, and the Superintendents Teacher Advisory Council are jointly sponsoring this first time collaborative effort. These groups represent more than 60,000 individuals who care greatly about the health of our public schools and are committed to advocating for adequate funding for the children of Wake County.
If you stop by any of the 50+ schools that are participating in this initiative, you might happen to come across any of the following VIPS: First Lady Mary Easley, Congressman David Price, Congressman Brad Miller, National Superintendent of the Year Bill McNeal, NC House Representatives Jennifer Weiss, Deborah Ross, Nelson Dollar, Linda Coleman and Paul Stam, Sheriff Donnie Harrison, District Court Judges Donna Stroud, Alice Stubbs, and Paul Gessner, all Wake County Commissioners, Board of Education members and many council members from Wake County's towns and cities.
Some key areas of focus for these important and informational visits will
be:
· Understanding how WCPSS continues to do an excellent job of educating
an increasingly diverse student population
· Meeting the needs of a fast growing population in crowded facilities
while continuing to maintain high standards of education.
· Balancing the demand for high quality schools and teacher workload
· Strengthening teacher recruitment and retention
· Keeping pace with needs of student enrollment which is growing
faster than the WCPSS operating budget needed to support that growth
