Odyssey of the Mind Teams: # 1 in the Region

April 2, 2004 - The Odyssey of the Mind teams from Partnership Elementary competed in the Regional Tournament on March 13 where they both earned a first place finish in their respective categories. On April 17 the teams will travel to Boone, NC for the State Tournament, competing for the right to attend the World Tournament in Washington DC.

The Balancing Act team consisted of Luke Lingafelt, Hunter Crump, Patrick Garnier, Luke Jensen, Trenton West, and Dylan Campbell. They had to build an asymmetrical structure made of balsa wood and glue that couldn't weigh more than 18 grams or be taller than 8.5 inches. The structure had to support as much weight as possible without breaking. (Their structure held 50 pounds.) In addition to building the structure, the boys also had to create a skit and transport the structure across the stage. They pretended to be bandits, stealing the priceless balsa structure only to have to destroy the evidence with weights as they were about to be caught by the security guard.

The Envirover team's members are Sean Martin, Sam Bryant, Mary Catherine Freeman, Savannah Phillips, Hunter Lehmann, Emily Boyette, and Michael McLaurin. They had to build and drive a human-powered vehicle that collected trash and delivered it to a factory where the trash was recycled to make a product of the team's choice. Their product was a "teacher tracker." They also had to create a humorous sales pitch for the product.

The Odyssey of the Mind teams, coached by parent volunteers, have been working on their problems since October. Partnership Elementary teachers say they are very proud of the teams' accomplishments and wish them the best of luck at the State Tournament.
