November 8, 2004 - A ribbon cutting at Knightdale High School Oct. 29 celebrates the opening of Wake County's newest high school, the seventeenth high school in the county.

"High school is more than a building," Superintendent Bill McNeal told the crowd gathered for the event. "It is a place where young people take off and soar."

Superintendent McNeal congratulated Principal Marvin Connelly, the faculty, students and community for successfully opening the school.

"I know what went into this day," McNeal said. "The town, the county commissioners, the school board and community came together saying we want a high school. And this is one fantastic high school."

The event began with a reception in the media center and then moved to the auditorium.

Principal Connelly presented a jersey to Knightdale Mayor Doug Boyd and recognized the school's faculty. County commissioner Joe Bryan and Board of Education member Kathryn Watson Quigg offered their congratulations. The school chorus and band provided music.

"We should be proud of this school," Bryan said. "The town, county and community worked hard to bring this school to Knightdale. This is a great day."

The crowd of more than 100 people then moved to the school's entry. Connelly was joined by Bryan, Quigg, Boyd and Area Assistant Superintendent Danny Barnes in cutting the ribbon to ceremonially open the new school. The celebration continued with a football game and a school dance.

Classes began August 10 at Knightdale High for 695 ninth- and tenth-graders. Juniors will be added next year and seniors in 2006. The three-story design of the school is a prototype that is being reused at Panther Creek High School, under construction and due to open in 2006.
