Wake County ABCs Results
9 Schools Of Excellence; 55 Schools Of Distinction; No Low-Performing Schools
Thursday, August 3, 2000 - Wake County Schools posted good performance under the 1999-2000 ABCs of Public Education, a state accountability program that examines student performance school-by-school. The local district had nine Schools of Excellence and 55 Schools of Distinction, as well as 90 percent of its schools attaining expected or exemplary growth status, and no low-performing schools.
ABCs results were released statewide today (August 3), the fourth year they've been reported for schools with grades 3-8, and the third year for high schools.
Wake County's ABCs Schools of Excellence are Davis Drive, Kingswood, Morrisville, Oak Grove, Partnership and West Lake elementary schools, and Davis Drive, Lufkin Road, and West Lake middle schools. These schools had at least 90 percent of their students perform at or above grade level and met expected growth. They will receive a banner to display and be invited to attend a banquet honoring academic excellence.
Wake County also had 55 schools, or 50 percent, named Schools of Distinction by the state, meaning at least 80 percent of their students performed at or above grade level. Close to 60 percent of Wake County's schools were named either Schools of Excellence or Schools of Distinction.
Wake had 11 schools, compared to 7 last year, that did not meet the expected growth standard - Bugg, Creech Road, Hodge Road, Rand Road, Smith and Zebulon elementaries, and East Cary, East Garner, East Millbrook, East Wake and Zebulon middle schools. None of the local schools was deemed low-performing, the lowest category, and one that can trigger state-mandated assistance.
Superintendent Bill McNeal was quick to praise students, teachers, principals, and school staff. "These are very good results. Anytime you have 90 percent of your schools performing where they should, that's great news for our children. And I know first-hand, our dedicated staff are constantly focused on the goal of having 95 percent of students performing at or above grade level by 2003; yes, we recognize it's an ambitious goal. And yes, we still have more to do, but I am very pleased with how far we've come."
ABCs stands for accountability at the school level; focusing on the basics of reading, writing, and mathematics; and control at the local level.
The ABCs program for elementary and middle schools focuses primarily on the average growth shown by groups of students on End-of-Grade (EOG) reading and mathematics tests. Average test results for a group of students at the end of one year are compared to scores for those same students at the end of the prior year. The high school program primarily looks at performance levels on End-of-Course (EOC) tests in selected subjects.
These results come on the heels of the news that Wake County posted its highest performance ever on EOG tests, a key component in determining K-8 schools' ABCs status.
Dr. Karen Banks, assistant superintendent for evaluation and research, noted, "These results are good, but of course we will never be satisfied until all of our schools score at their expected levels of growth. In the coming weeks, we will be analyzing the school-by-school results for every grade level, and working with schools to understand how they scored the way they did."
Wake County had 74 elementary schools in The ABCs program for 1999-2000, 22 middle schools, and 14 high schools, as well as three special or optional schools. Of those:
- 92 percent of elementary schools met either expected or exemplary growth (11 percent and 81 percent respectively), compared to 91 percent last year;
- 77 percent of middle schools met expected or exemplary growth (32 and 45 percent respectively), compared to 95 percent last year; and
- all the high schools met exemplary growth except one that made expected growth, for 100 percent, compared to the same 100 percent last year.
