Elementary Schools Plan Kindergarten Registration Events for Feb. 2

January 20, 2012 - Many Wake County elementary schools are scheduling special events on Thursday, Feb. 2 for families who need to register and enroll their child to begin kindergarten in 2012-13.
In order to attend kindergarten, a child must be 5 years old on or before August 31 of the current school year. In accordance with state law, gifted children who are age four by April 16 also will be considered for admission.
Parents have registered more than 6,800 children as of today to begin kindergarten in Wake County public schools in 2012-13. The school system expects 12,000 kindergartners to begin school next year.
Please encourage families with children who will be in kindergarten this fall to register and enroll their child now. The school system moved registration and enrollment for kindergartners earlier this year to prepare families to participate in the school choice selection plan. We need everyone to help get the word out.
Families must register to participate in the school choice process
Families need to register rising kindergartners to get their child’s NC-WISE student ID number prior to participating in the new school choice selection process for the 2012-13 school year. Parents will use their child’s NC-WISE student ID number to complete the online school choice selection form.
Families must enroll their child for kindergarten
To enroll, parents of rising kindergartners should bring:
- their child’s birth certificate,
- parent/guardian photo ID,
- proof of address in the form of a water, electric or gas bill or a signed lease or rental agreement,
- and their child’s immunization record.

Schools schedule special kindergarten registration hours on Feb. 2
Elementary schools are providing a special opportunity for families to visit schools, register and enroll on Feb. 2. We want as many people to complete registration and enrollment as possible on that date. Schools have established times for registration and enrollment, as well as school tours.
The forms you will need to complete for enrollment can be found on our website. You can download the forms from the website, complete them at home at your convenience and bring them with you to the school on Feb. 2 when you visit to enroll and register your child and tour the school.
